PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- 2011 has arrived and UMES basketball continued their non-conference slate the previous seven days, as MEAC play is set to commence this coming week. Hawks men's basketball headed to Colorado in their first match against a Big 12 team, while women's basketball finished non-conference play with two games.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Despite playing Colorado very close early on, including a tie game at 30 with 6:11 to go, UMES fell to the Buffaloes after a 16-3 run to end the first half gave the Hawks' opponents the lead for good. Colorado took the victory 92-65, dropping UMES to 3-9 on the season.

Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored 18 points off 7-12 shooting, getting his seventh game this season with at least 17 points. Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 12 points with three assists, while Tyler Hines (Sickerville, N.J.) got six points with seven rebounds.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Lady Hawks were battling injuries but still fought hard in their final two non-conference games, but ultimately succumbed to Canisius on the road 58-48 and American at home 64-60. UMES fell to 2-8 on the season.

UMES was tied with Canisius at the half at 21, and as late as 3:47 in the second half, the Lady Hawks were down by just three points, but could not close the gap. Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 19 points against Canisius, including going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Against American, the Lady Hawks were close again, being within three points with 1:21 left, but fell just short in the end. Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) scored a career high 24 points with five boards. Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) got a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
