HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS
Jan. 8, 2012
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The 2012 calendar year has finally arrived and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program is fully underway with its winter season. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have reached the midpoint of their regular-season play, while the indoor track team began its schedule this past Saturday. With the bowling team resuming action later this week, all winter programs will have participated in action by week’s end.
The men’s basketball team faced a difficult match in its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest of the 2012 calendar year as the Hawks met Norfolk State University this past Saturday. NSU, which came into the contest with double-digit wins and a perfect record in conference play, overcame a one-point deficit at halftime to ground the Hawks.
The Hawks were led in the contest by junior Pina Guillaume (Chad, Africa), who had a team-high 12 rebounds and nine points. Junior Percy Woods (Hyattsville, Md.) and sophomore Louis Bell (Washington, D.C.) each had a team-high 15 points.
The men began the week with an 82-55 loss at Lehigh University on Tuesday, Jan. 3. The Hawks started off slow in the contest as the men used a 7-for-29 performance from the field in the first-half to fall behind by 29 at intermission. UMES outscored Lehigh, 39-37, in the second-half but the damage had already been done.
Sophomore Ron Spencer (Sicklerville, N.J.) was the top performer for the squad as he posted 10 rebounds and nine points off of the bench. He also had two blocks in a game-high 31 minutes, while junior Akeem Anderson (Memphis, Tenn.) had a team-high 12 points.
Spencer's efforts aided him in being honored as the men's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 9. He has now received this award the past two times it has been offered.
The UMES women’s basketball team posted a phenomenal second-half effort, but it was not enough as the squad dropped a 61-58 decision to Norfolk St., this past Saturday. The women, who trailed 34-19 at halftime, fell victim to a three-pointer at the buzzer to drop to 1-1 in MEAC play.
Senior Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) tallied a team-high 12 points and four blocks, while junior Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) had nine points, five rebounds and three steals. The Hawks shot 16-for-32 from the floor in the second-half as the squad used a late 6-0 run to knot the game up before NSU’s last second heroics.
The women began the week with a 62-55 loss at Elizabeth City State University. The contest rounded out the Hawk’s non-conference road schedule.
The team was led by senior Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) who used an 11-for-12 effort from the foul line to notch a season-high 15 points. Agbasi chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and five blocks, while junior Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) had eight points and three steals.
Agbasi's efforts aided her in being honored as the women's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 9. The accolades for the women did not stop there as freshman Porsha Barr (Waldorf, Md.) was named MEAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 3.
The results of the indoor track meet that took place this past Saturday were unavailable as of press time.
