PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had four teams compete over the holidays with men and women's basketball, bowling, and the indoor track teams all seeing action.

BOWLING

The bowling team wrapped up 2007 with 11 wins and a third place finish at the Holiday Jamboree in Elmwood, N.J.

UMES finished the tournament with 11 wins and just four loses to improve their overall record to 51-12 on the season.

The Lady Hawks opened the tournament with wins over #16 St. Francis College (NY), #5 Sacred Heart, #14 Southern, and Morgan State. They would go on to lose their final match of the day to #18 St. Peter's College by 36 pins, 878-842.

Day two proved to be much of the same result with wins over Howard, #8 Delaware State, Kutztown, and #6 Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU). Their only loss came to #7 New Jersey City in the third match of the day.

UMES opened the final day with wins over #12 Adelphi and Cheyney. However, they would drop a pair of games to #18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) and #6 FDU before avenging the loss to UWW in their final match to secure a third place finish.

The third ranked Lady Hawks were led by freshmen Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East H.S.) who earned All-Tournament Team honors and finished third place overall individually. She finished with seven games over 200, including a high of 215, for an average of 199.8 in ten games.

Christine King (Uppder Darby, Pa./Archbishop Predergast), Jessica Worsley (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial H.S.), and Laura Zanrucha (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley H.S.) all finished with three games over 200. Worsley rolled a team-high 244 against FDU. Sara DiScioscia (Hampton, Va./Poquoson H.S.) also picked up a 200 with a 203 to make it 17 games over 200 for the Lady Hawks.

Frahm was awarded Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Athlete of the Week following her performance in the Holiday Jamboree. She totaled 1,998 pins for the tournament in head-to-head games. This is Frahm's second time to win the award and the fourth time that a UMES bowler has taken home the honor.

INDOOR TRACK

Meanwhile, the indoor track teams took eight first place and five second place finishes in the UMES Coach O Collegiate Invitational hosted by the Hawks on the beautiful Princess Anne campus.

The teams looked strong once again in the field events with Tiona Long (La Plata, Md./New Brunswick H.S.) taking first in the shot put with a throw of 12.87 meters. James Moore (Manassas, Va./Osbourn H.S.) and Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas/Faith Temple Academy) tied for first in the men's high jump with jumps of 2.03 meters. Strachan finished second in the men's pole vault with a mark of 3.96 meters, while Rashida Beckford (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate H.S.) tied for second in the women's high jump with 1.57 meters jump.

UMES continued to impress on the track with Tanisha Wisdom (St. Catherine, Jamaica/G.C. Foster College) leading the Hawks with wins in the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash with times of 7.91 and 24.66 seconds respectively.

Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.J./Rahway H.S.) finished first in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 50.35, while Clayton James (St.Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston College) came in a close second with a 50.84 and Corey Alexander (Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) not far behind in third with a 51.05.

The Hawks were solid in the distance races again. The men's team of Alexander, Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya/Tulon H.S.), Solomon Kirongo (Nairobi, Kenya/Kipkabus H.S.), and William McCullough (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills H.S.) won the distance medley with a time of 10:48.09.

Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya/Kapsabet Boys H.S.) won the men's 5000 meter run with a time of 15:05.64, while teammates Kirongo and Kiprotich took second and third place respectively.

The women capped of the event by once again winning the 4x400 meter relay (4:00.5) with the team of Sherie Brown (Baltimore, Md./Edmondson H.S.), Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence H.S.) Danielle Spencer (Pikesville, Md./Pikesville H.S.), and Wisdom, while the team of Dexter Miller (Harlem, N.Y./Olympia H.S.), Jones-Burden, Alexander, and James followed with a second place finish (3:19.64) for the men in the 4x400.

Wisdom was named the first ever MEAC Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week following her performance in the meet. She took home three of the Hawks eight first place finishes in the event and her 24.66 in the 200 meter dash is the second fastest in conference this season.

Jones-Burden was also recognized by the MEAC as `an other top performer' for his effort in the meet as well.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

In other news, the women's basketball team are winners of their last two with wins coming over Kent State, 76-71, and American, 60-56, after having lost three straight games prior to Syracuse, 85-66, Canisius, 70-60, and Army, 76-64. UMES (6-6) is led by Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa./National Christian Academy) with 14.9 points, 2.89 assists, and one block per game. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) is the team's second leading scorer with 14.1 points per game and is shooting a team-high 38.2 percent from beyond the arc. She also leads the team with 7.8 rebounds and 2.17 steals per game.

Freshman Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md./Mardela H.S.) is averaging a solid 9.4 points per game to go along with her 2.64 assists per game. Senior Brittany Adkins (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Technical H.S.) is averaging 5.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while freshman Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) is shooting a team-high 52.9 percent from the floor.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

In other action, the men's basketball team ended an eight game skid with a win over Kennesaw State, 77-72. The Hawks have dropped three straight since with loses coming to Wagner, 105-86, Army, 85-61, and Nebraska, 86-50.

Freshmen Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Nebraska game.

Davis had a solid game against the Cornhuskers, finishing with 11 points and a career-high six rebounds to go along with three assists.

The Hawks second leading scorer, Davis, is averaging 11.1 points per game, while dishing out a team-high 2.93 assists, which is good for fourth in the MEAC.

Junior Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) and senior BJ Nimocks (Detroit, Mich./Cloud County C.C.) were also recognized by the MEAC as other top performers for their effort against Nebraska. Tyson led the Hawks scoring attack with 16 points on three-of-five shooting from three-point range, while adding three steals. Nimocks, the Hawks lone senior, received his first start of the season and responded by finishing two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Tyson leads the Hawks scoring attack with 18.6 points per game, which is tied for first in the MEAC. He is also first on the team in steals per game (1.79), free-throw shooting (77.8 percent), and three-point shooting (33.7 percent).

Freshmen Denzel Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln H.S.) and junior Aleksandar Popovic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Weatherford College) are tied for first on the team and third in the MEAC with 7.1 rebounds per game. Jackson is also shooting a team-high 52.3 percent from the field, while Popovic leads the team with 11 total blocks.

UPCOMING MEET

The indoor track teams will compete in their third meet of the year when they travel to New York, N.Y. to compete in the Fordham Invitational on January 11 and 12.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENT

The UMES bowling team will take a few weeks off before heading to Hampton, Va. to compete in a MEAC Northern Division match-up on January 19 and 20. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on both days.

UPCOMING GAMES

The UMES men and women's basketball teams will travel to North Carolina for a game against Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) on Saturday, January 12, before heading to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State University on Monday, January 14. This will be the Lady Hawks first MEAC game of the season and the men's second.

Both games have tip-off times of 5:30 E.T. for the women and 7:30 E.T. for the men.
