Laura Zanrucha was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Athlete of the Week following her tournament performance. She led the Lady Hawks with three games over 200 and finished with a 204.8 average, good for 11th overall in a meet that featured over 100 bowlers. Nebraska captured first place and was followed by Vanderbilt and UMES. BASEBALL In other action, the baseball team opened up their season with a 9-1 loss to Rider University in a seven inning single-game affair in what was scheduled to be a doubleheader. After a three hour delay due to muddy field conditions, Carl Huber took the mound for UMES (0-1) and would finish with three innings of work as he threw 85 pitches, 47 of which were for strikes. Huber collected his first loss of the season, allowing five earned runs and three walks to go along with one strike out. Relievers Elliott Arrington and Dan Sterling combined to work the final four innings. Arrington gave up one earned run and struck out two batters, while Sterling allowed one unearned run and a hit. The Hawks finished with three errors on the day. Offensively, UMES had four hits with Josh Dunham bringing in Tyler Love on a grounder to third base for the Hawks only score on the day. Love, Ryan Coppi, and Ken Richardson collected the other three hits. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL In other news, the women's basketball quickly rebounded with dominating performances against Norfolk State University (NSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). The Lady Hawks would quickly get back on track with an impressive win over NSU, 84-65. UMES (15-10, 8-4 MEAC) was led offensively by four players in double figures. April McBride posted her ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Tiffany Reid collected her second with 16 points and 10 boards. Queenique Tyler posted a new career-high with 16 points as well, just one game after setting her previous mark. Casey Morton also added 15 points as she rounded out the double digit scoring. The Lady Hawks gave the UMES faithful plenty to cheer about on homecoming as they topped FAMU, 74-54. McBride finished with her 10th double-double of the season with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Chena Parker added the first of her career, finishing with 18 points and a personal best 13 rebounds. Reid and Adkins added nine points apiece for UMES (16-10, 9-4 MEAC). With the win UMES remained in a three-way tie with Morgan State and Delaware State for third place in the MEAC. MEN'S BASKETBALL Meanwhile, the men's basketball has dropped three in a row after winning two straight, with two recent losses coming against Norfolk State University (NSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). The Hawks second half rally came up just short as they fell to an opportunistic NSU, 68-61. UMES (4-23, 2-10 MEAC) was led by Marc Davis who finished with a team-high 19 points and five assists, while Ed Tyson added 17 points. Gary Lee matched a career-high, finishing with 17 points, including 15 in the second period, on 50 percent shooting from the floor. BJ Nimocks also posted a career-high with 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, the Hawks fell to Florida A&M, 62-60, in front of a season-high crowd of 5,164 during homecoming weekend as a last second layup attempt to send the game into overtime rolled in and out at the buzzer. Tyson, one of two players to finish in double figures for UMES (4-24, 2-11 MEAC), led all scorers with 26 points. Davis added 13 points, including 11 in the second period, on nine-of-11 free-throw shooting.
