RAMIREZ, SACA NAMED PRMC UMES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
March 19, 2012 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) and senior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of March 19. Saca receives the award after throwing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to conclude the week. The sophomore has been the bright spot for UMES' pitching staff this season as he leads the team in ERA (4.00), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3:1) and innings pitched (27). Saca has epitomized efficiency while on the mound this season, particularly in the past five games, where he has not walked a batter in almost 12 innings. Saca opened the week with a three-inning stint against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Monday, before tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against Norfolk State on Saturday. He fanned one and allowed three hits in the Saturday's opener. The sophomore capped the week by going 4 2/3 innings against the Spartans with one strikeout and one hit allowed on Sunday. Anais opened up the outdoor track season with a historical effort at the Wake Forest Open, as the senior broke the school record in the 1,500m run. The senior finished the event with a time of 4:28.83. Anais’ time proved to be just a hair faster than the previous record, which was held by Eva Slavikova.
