March 30, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball dropped their series against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Delaware State on the road while men’s track and field finished second at the Hornet Invitational in Dover, Del. and women’s bowling prepares to defend their national title in Michigan.
Sophomores Martha Perez and Bryan Chaikowsky were named the UMES Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 22. Perez, of the women's bowling team, was named the MEAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer in Greensboro, N.C., despite the No. 5 Lady Hawks' loss in the semifinals to Florida A&M. Chaikowsky, of the baseball team, hit .750 (9-for-12) in four games last week at Duke and at home in a three-game sweep against Coppin State. He collected five runs, eight RBIs, three doubles, three stolen bases and a triple. BASEBALL UMES sophomore outfielder Chaikowsky was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 22. Junior outfielder Phil Vaughn and sophomore pitcher Matt Witte also received nods for the conference for the play during the week. Senior captain Pat Hercinger went 2-for-4 in game one and belted his first career home run in game two, but UMES fell, 15-5 and 6-3, to Mount Saint Mary's at Hawks Stadium. In game one, Josh Dunham and Jorge Pichardo had two hits apiece and Ben Vasko added a hit and three RBI’s. Russel Deutschmann pitched the first four frames for the Hawks and allowed seven runs on 10 hits. He dropped to 0-4 on the year. Witte (2-1) threw his second straight complete game to help UMES earn a split of its MEAC doubleheader with Delaware State. After winning the first game 5-2, the Hawks dropped the second 18-5. Hercinger went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored in the game one win while Vaughn had one hit in each game to keep his nine-game streak intact. The two share the longest mark for consecutive games with a hit for the Hawks this season. Chaikowsky was 2-for-3 and Vasko chipped in with a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs and run scored. Zimmerman (2-4) took the nightcap loss. Both center fielder Vaughn and left fielder Hercinger extended their hitting streaks to 10 games in the Hawks finale loss to Delaware State. Freshman Karim Gonzalez went the first 4.1 innings, surrendering six runs on six hits and seven walks to absorb the loss. He also struck out three falling to 1-4. WOMEN’S BOWLING
For the sixth straight year the UMES Women's Bowling Team has earned a bid to the NCAA Championships. The eight at-large bids were March 25, at 5:00 p.m. by the NCAA Women's Bowling Committee in a selection show broadcast live on www.NCAA.com. The Lady Hawks are just one of four schools in the nation to attend every National Championship. Coincidentally the top eight teams in the current National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) poll were selection to participate in the event. Arkansas State, Central Missouri, Delaware State (DSU), Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU), Nebraska, New Jersey City, UMES and Vanderbilt were selected for the 2009 field. The Lady Hawks, led by Head Coach Sharon Brummell sport a 115-39 record, the second best in the country, and are the reigning champions, having knocked off Arkansas State for the 2008 title. OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD Junior James Moore and sophomore Amon Kiprotich each won events and four others finished second as the UMES men's track and field team finished second at the Hornet Invitational. Moore and Kiprotich topped the field in the high jump and 5,000 meters, respectively, with Moore leaping 1.98 meters and Kiprotich running 15:59.72 to capture the pair of events. MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS In his second year at the helm, Head Coach Dylan Vickers has been working to turnaround the men's and women's tennis program at UMES. The Salisbury University graduate is well on his way. Both the men and women`s teams defeated Wesley College at the Hawks Outdoor Tennis Complex. Rashad James helped lead the men to a 4-3 victory. The junior won his single competition in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-3). This marked Vickers first collegiate men's win, breaking a 22-game losing streak for the Hawks. Aissatou Ba and Solana McMillan helped pace the Lady Hawks to a 5-2 win over Wesley. The two, with LaToya Coltrane and Latoya Jones-Stewart, won their singles competitions. UPCOMING COMPETITIONS Hawk baseball closes a two-game season series at Maryland on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The 2009 women’s bowling NCAA Championship will be held April 9-11 at Super Bowl Lanes of Canton, in Canton, Michigan. UMES Track & Field heads to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays April 3-4. Both men's and women's tennis teams face Coppin State next at home on March 30. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
