April 5, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - It’s springtime at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and competition is heating up for the Hawks. The men’s and women’s tennis teams are having their most successful season to date, the baseball team had a tough loss against the University of Maryland and softball opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Delaware State University. BASEBALL Sophomore shortstop Remo Orsini went 2-for-4 with a run scored but Maryland overpowered the UMES, 12-3, at Shipley Field. Phil Vaughn was 1-for-4 with an RBI and his team-leading 16th stolen base. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Russel Deutschmann (0-5) took the loss for UMES, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk. Freshman left-hander John DesChamps picked up a win in relief in game one and a save in game two to secure a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State, 8-6 and 4-1 at Hawks Stadium. The Hawks spotted the Spartans a 5-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings before scoring eight of the final nine runs in game one and came from behind with all four runs in the fifth and sixth innings of game two. With the victories, UMES (8-22, 6-2 MEAC) surpassed its 2008 win total and broke a three-game losing streak. NSU (6-11, 3-4) has lost three straight. DesChamps (2-4) threw 3.2 innings, surrendered just one run on two hits and struck out three. Elliott Alston was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Deutschmann also chipped in with two hits in three at-bats and picked up a run scored in the game two win. The UMES baseball team scored two runs in each of the first three innings, but Norfolk State's Anselmo Cantu hit two home runs to spur the Spartans to a 9-6 come-from-behind win. UMES starter Karim Gonzalez was perfect through three innings and left after five in line for the win before The Hawks' bullpen faltered. Brian White and Deutschmann combined to give up the final four runs. White (0-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing all three of the runners he inherited from Gonzalez to score. He also gave up two runs of his own in two innings on four hits and a walk. SOFTBALL Having won the first game 7-4, the UMES softball team completed its double-header sweep of Coppin State University (CSU) in style. The Lady Hawks bested CSU 16-2 in the night cap after knocking in 13 runs on nine hits, including three triples and three doubles, in the top of the fifth inning. Inde Whitehurst earned the first UMES win. She pitched a complete seven inning game, striking out nine and giving up four runs. Whitehurst (4-3) only walked three of the 32 batters faced and allowed nine hits.
Freshman Hannah Mills went 5-for-7 on the day, including two triples and a homerun in the wins. Mishayla Truttman (3-3) earned the night cap win for UMES, striking out seven. Senior captain Kendra Saunders' first inning solo homerun proved to be the game winner as the UMES softball team topped Delaware State University (DSU) 1-0 for the first time in over five years. UMES split their MEAC home opener against the Lady Hornets after dropping the night cap 7-2. Whitehurst pitched a three hit shutout in game one. The freshman improved to 4-3 on the season, walking no one and striking out five of the 24 batters faced. Mishayla Truttman received the loss in the finale. Truttman (1-4) struck out four and walked two. Saunders finished the day 3-for-5 with a homerun and a double. DSU put up 12 runs in the final three innings to comeback and beat UMES 16-9. The contest closed out a three-game series over the weekend between the MEAC rivals with the Lady Hornets winning 2-1. Cassandra Carlos was 3-5 on the day with two doubles. Mills (5-2) received the loss for UMES. She pitched five and one-third innings allowing four runs on eight hits. MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS UMES missed a weekend of competition due to rain but it did not deter the Hawks as they came ready for their MEAC contest, downing Coppin State University (CSU) at home and extending their win streaks. Down three games to none in singles play, the Hawks (2-6) came back on huge wins by freshmen Marquet Robinson and Osvaldo Rivera. Both swept their opponents straight sets (6-0, 6-0). After Richard Warren claimed the sixth game win on default, the match came down to doubles play, tied 3-3. The Lady Hawks (2-7) dropped their first two games in singles play before sweeping CSU 5-2 to win the match. Bolanle Abioye and Latoya Jones-Stewart took their opponents in straight sets, while Solana McMillan came from behind to win hers 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. UPCOMING CONTESTS Baseball is on the road to St. Peter’s this week. They face off on April 8 with the first pitch thrown at 1 p.m. The Lady Hawks softball team will see Delaware State again on April 8 to make up a non-conference game between the two rivals. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Dover, Delaware. Both tennis teams head to N.J. to compete against Monmouth University on March 8. The matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
