PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Celia Whyte (Manchester Jamaica) and freshman John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Athletes of the Week for the period ending April 5.

Whyte, of the women's track and field team, qualified to compete in NCAA regional competition in the 800 meters Friday at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. She finished seventh in the event in 2:09.77.

Whyte was also part of the Lady Hawks' 4x800-meter relay team that shattered a nearly 25-year-old school record in that event. She ran the opening leg of the race, pacing UMES to a time of 8:44.38, besting the previous record set April 16, 1984 of 9:00.01.

The track and field teams travel to Hampton, Va., for the Hampton Invitational Friday and Saturday (April 10-11).

DesChamps, a left-handed pitcher on the baseball team, made three appearances out of the bullpen last week, earning a win and a save with an earned run average of 2.25. He threw eight innings, allowed 10 hits, six runs (two earned) and struck out eight at Maryland and at home against Norfolk State.

The win and save came in each game of a doubleheader sweep of the Spartans on April 4. The Hawks trailed in both games before notching come-from-behind wins.

UMES (8-23, 6-3 MEAC) hits the road for a seven-game road trip starting Wednesday with a doubleheader at St. Peter's in Jersey City, N.J.
