PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The softball team at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is making its mark on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and bowling continues All-American streak. Senior Celia Whyte and freshman John DesChamps have been named UMES Athletes of the Week for the period ending April 5.

Whyte, of the women's track and field team, qualified to compete in NCAA regional competition in the 800 meters Friday at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. She finished seventh in the event in 2:09.77.

DesChamps, a left-handed pitcher on the baseball team, made three appearances out of the bullpen last week, earning a win and a save with an earned run average of 2.25. He threw eight innings, allowed 10 hits, six runs (two earned) and struck out eight at Maryland and at home against Norfolk State.

BASEBALL

Junior center fielder Phil Vaughn was 4-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, two runs and two RBIs, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell, 9-8 and 4-0, to Saint Peter's in a doubleheader at Cochrane Stadium.

The Hawks, who dropped to 8-25 overall, held three separate leads in the game one and got a quality outing for senior left-hander Brian White in game two. White (0-4) took the loss but deserved a better fate. He went all six innings, allowed two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking two.

John DesChamps received the game one loss for the Hawks.

BOWLING

Another year and the UMES has more All-Americans. At the National Championship banquet, held prior to the start of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the National Tenpins Coaches Association announced the 2009 All-American Teams and national award winners. For the second year in a row, both Maria Rodriguez and Kristina Frahm have been named All-Americans for the 2008-09 season.

Frahm, the 2007-08 NTCA Rookie of the Year was named an Honorable Mention All-American while Rodriguez took home First-Team All-American honors.

Katherine Brown recorded the third highest pinfall of the team games.

The two had solid seasons for the Lady Hawks. Rodriguez was the MEAC Player of the Year and a first-team selection while Frahm was a second-team selection. Both were named MEAC Bowling Athlete of the Week four times.

After team games at the NCAA tournament, UMES stood in second place overall with 4,095 pins, just 47 behind the leader Nebraska who put up an impressive 4,142. The Hawks and the Huskers are the only two teams to average over 1,000 for the team games with UMES sporting a 1023.8 and Nebraska a 1035.5.

The Hawks are doing well thanks to an unlikely duo. Sophomore Katherine Brown and senior Sara DiScioscia both normal reserves for the Lady Hawks elevated their games. Brown recorded the third highest pinfall of the team games with an 881 for an average of a 220.25 while DiScioscia, who entered as a substitute in game two, averaged the third best of the field with a 223.67 on a three game tally of 671 pins.

But by the end of seedings, UMES had fallen to third place just behind New Jersey City University (NJCU). Nebraska earned the no. 1 seed, never relinquishing control of the top spot, up 256 pins after four team and five Baker sets.

A second-round knockout wasn't what the reigning champion expected, but it happened nonetheless as UMES fell 4-0 to sixth-seeded Central Missouri (CMU) and 4-1-1 to second-seeded NJCU.

Nebraska eventually defeated CMU in the championship game to take the 2009 title.

SOFTBALL

The UMES softball team is making a statement in the MEAC this year. The Lady Hawks split with defending MEAC champions Delaware State University for the second time this season after taking the first game 10-1 in six innings.

Inde Whitehurst allowed one run on seven hits in six innings to earn the opening win. She improves to 6-4 on the season.

Hannah Mills started on the mound in the finale but was relieved by Mishayla Truttman after just a third of an inning having giving up six runs on five DSU hits.

While both teams combined for nine runs in the first inning, every Lady Hornet got a hit in the second game on their way to an 11-3 win over UMES.

DSU held the Lady Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the game to improve to 13-13. Mills, who received the loss, went 2-for-6 on the day with three RBI.

Ebony Hahn led the Lady Hawks at the plate going 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and three RBI.
