PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Senior Lenora Guion-Firmin (La Trinite, Martinique) and junior Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) have been name the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of May 27. This is the fourth time this year that Guion-Firmin has been recognized with the award, while Smith takes it home for the third time.

Smith was the top male performer this week after he ran well at the NCAA Track and Field Championships East Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C. The junior used a 13.98 finish in his first race of the 110m hurdles to qualify for the next round, where he then ran an 11.71 to move on. He was the only UMES male athlete to qualify for the championships.

Guion-Firmin continued her trend of performing well in big races after she used a 51.97 finish to place second in the 400m at the NCAA Track and Field Championships East Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C. Her time qualified her for the championships in the event as she outlasted several noteworthy names in the race. She ran a 52.13 in the opening race to qualify for the next round. Her time was the only one in her heat to finish in the 52 second range.
