PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Junior track & field thrower Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Roseau, Dominica) and senior sprinter Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on June 3rd. Both are one and two in most times awarded this season, with Simon being named nine times and Evans being named eight times.

Simon concluded his junior season at the NCAA Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla. Competing in the shot put and the discus, Dillon excelled in the discus, barely missing the cut to Oregon with a 14th place finish. However, his toss in the discus reset a school record with a 56.92 meter throw. The measure beat his previous record of 56.48 meters at the Morgan Legacy this past April.

Evans, the lone Lady Hawk to qualify for the Preliminaries, became the lone Hawk to earn the right to move onto Oregon for the NCAA Championships. In the 100 meter dash, Evans finished 11th in the first round in Thursday and made the cut with a 12th place finish out of 12 possible spots for the semifinals in Oregon. Her time of 11.49 seconds in the quarterfinal was a season high. Gayon fared even better in the 200 meter dash finished fifth in the first round with a time of 23.33 seconds, and advanced with a 23.56 second, seventh place time.

Semifinals in the women’s 100 and 200 meter dashes at the NCAA Championships take place on June 11th and 12th with finals coming on the 13th and 14th
