PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had four teams compete over the past week with men and women's basketball, baseball, and the softball teams all seeing action. BASEBALL In other action, the baseball team has opened up their season 0-9 with losses coming to Rider (9-1, 6-2, 11-6), Lehigh (6-1, 4-2[8]), Pittsburgh (25-3[8], 10-0), and Rhode Island (3-2, 18-3). Ryan Coppi leads the team with a .310 batting average and nine hits, while he is tied for second on the team in runs batted in (3 RBI) with Josh Dunham (3). Pat Hercinger leads the team in RBI (9) and slugging percentage (.357). He is also second in batting (.286) and tied for second in hits (8). Relief pitcher Elliott Arrington (0-1) leads the team in earned run average (2.45 ERA), appearances (5), and opponent's batting average (.231). Mike Roberts (0-2) has the lowest ERA (2.63) among starting pitchers and leads the team in innings pitched (13.2 IP). Dan Sterling leads the Hawks in strikeouts (16). SOFTBALL Meanwhile, the softball team started their season by dropping their first four games of the North Carolina A&T (NCAT) Fastpitch Invitational against Mississippi Valley State (10-2[5]), Winston-Salem State (10-0[5], 8-0[5]), and NCAT (12-0). Cassandra Carlos leads the team in batting average (.300), hits (3), and doubles (2). Kendra Saunders is the team leader in runs batted in (2 RBI), home runs (1), slugging percentage (.714), and on-base percentage (.500). Pitcher Mishayla Truttman (0-1) has the lowest earned run average (5.73 ERA) and opponent batting average (.353). Truttman and Bonnie Heineken (0-2) are tied for the most strikeouts (4) on the team. Heineken is the team leader in appearances (3) and innings pitched (11.1 IP) WOMEN'S BASKETBALL In other news, the women's basketball team defeated Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) before losing to Coppin State University (CSU). The Lady Hawks gave the UMES faithful plenty to cheer about on homecoming as they topped FAMU, 74-54. April McBride finished with her 10th double-double of the season with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Chena Parker added the first of her career, finishing with 18 points and a personal best 13 rebounds. Tiffany Reid and Brittany Adkins added nine points apiece for UMES (16-10, 9-4 MEAC). The Lady Hawks matched a school record for win in a season with a 64-41 victory over B-CU. Four players finished in double digit scoring for UMES (17-10, 10-4 MEAC) as McBride led all scorers with 14 points. Reid and Casey Morton finished with 12 points apiece, while Parker added 10 points. After previously beating CSU earlier this season, the Lady Hawks were no match this time around as they fell on Senior Day 75-49. UMES (17-11, 10-5) failed to put a single player in double figures for the first time this season as Morton and Reid finished with nine points each. McBride added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while seniors Kristi Veltkamp and Adkins had seven and four points, respectively. With the loss UMES moved into a tie with for second place in the MEAC. MEN'S BASKETBALL Meanwhile, the men's basketball team has dropped five straight games with recent losses coming to Florida A&M University (FAMU), Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU), and Coppin State University (CSU). The Hawks fell to Florida A&M, 62-60, in front of a season-high crowd of 5,164 during homecoming weekend as a last second layup attempt to send the game into overtime rolled in and out at the buzzer. Ed Tyson, one of two players to finish in double figures for UMES (4-24, 2-11 MEAC), led all scorers with 26 points. Marc Davis added 13 points, including 11 in the second period, on nine-of-11 free-throw shooting. Omar Akram provided a spark off the bench as he set career-highs with seven points and six rebounds in 15 minutes of action that all came in the second half. The Hawks could not withstand a second half run as they were downed 73-60 by B-CU on ESPNU. Tyson led UMES (4-25, 2-12 MEAC) with a team-high 18 points, while Gary Lee added 14 points to go along with career-highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Ishmawiyl McFadden finished with 11 points and a career best eight rebounds. The Hawks bowed out to CSU on Senior Day, 85-66, as they bid farewell to true senior, BJ Nimocks, and two others, Brandon Moore and Jahmal Bivins. Tyson finished with a team-high 25 points for UMES (4-26, 2-13 MEAC). Nimocks had 12 points and seven boards in his home finale, while McFadden added eight points. Moore concluded his college career with four rebounds in limited actions, while Bivins did not play. Akram recorded his first collegiate double-double as he set career-highs with 10 points and 10 boards. UPCOMING MEET The UMES indoor track teams will gear up for the NCAA Indoor Championships when they compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. on March 7 and 8. UPCOMING TOURNAMENT The UMES bowling team has a couple of weeks off to prepare for MEAC Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. on March 21-23. The schedule is to be announced. UPCOMING BASKETBALL GAMES The UMES men and women's basketball teams will head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the MEAC Tournament the week of March 10-15. UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES The UMES baseball team will take to the road for the first time this season as they travel to Charleston, S.C. for a weekend series against Charleston Southern on March 7-9. They are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. for game one and on day one and 1:00 p.m. for games two and three. They then return home for a pair of single-games against Temple and Navy on March 11 and 13, respectively, both starting at 2:30 p.m. UPCOMING SOFTBALL GAMES The UMES softball team will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to compete in the South Carolina State University (SCSU) Tournament. They take on SCSU and Coppin State at 10:00 a.m. and Noon, respectively, on March 8. The Lady Hawks return to action against the Eagles and Bulldogs beginning at noon and immediately thereafter on March 9. They then return home for a doubleheader against North Carolina Central on March 13 starting at 1:00 p.m. |
