PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a host of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. WOMEN'S BOWLING The UMES bowling team remained second in the nation in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Associate Poll after receiving four first place votes for a total of 568 points. The Lady Hawks have won more games (104) than any other collegiate team this season. Nebraska stood atop the poll with 622 points. INDOOR TRACK The UMES indoor track teams were represented well by two athletes at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Allodin Fothergill and Tanisha Wisdom finished 10th and 13th in the 400-meter dash, respectively. Fothergill ran a solid 47.24 after previously holding the fifth fastest time in the nation with a time of 46.36. Unfortunately, only the top eight times make the finals, however; his time was better than athletes from Auburn, Washington State, Baylor, and Georgia. Wisdom who entered with the sixth fastest time in the country at 52.63, would miss the finals as she crossed the line with a time of 53.85. She finished ahead of runners from Mississippi State, Penn State, South Carolina, Kansas State, and North Carolina A&T. BASEBALL In other action, the baseball team has yet to pick up their first win of the season although they have dropped several close games, including two against Savannah State (4-1, 3-2). They also lost decisions to Temple (10-7), Navy (20-6), Villanova (15-0), Saint Joeseph's (11-3, 4-0), and Longwood (11-2). Remo Orsini leads the Hawks with a .303 batting average and 20 hits, while Pat Hercinger is first with 14 RBIs, 10 walks, a .393 on base percentage, and a .328 slugging percentage. Phil Vaughn is tops with 13 runs. Relief pitcher Elliott Arrington (0-2) leads the team in lowest earned run average (5.01) and appearances (10). Matt Witte is first in innings pitched (26.2), while Dan Sterling continues to remain tops on the team with 29 strikeouts. Jervonta' Wright has the lowest opponent batting average at .222. Tyler Love was named the Technology Education Association of Maryland's 2008 Donald Maley College Scholarship recipient for his accomplishments' as a student in the technology field. SOFTBALL Meanwhile, the softball team has gone 3-8 over the last 11 contests with wins coming over North Carolina Central (NCCU), 19-11, 7-5, 8-3 and losses to La Salle, 14-0 [5], 8-0 [6], Winston-Salem State 11-2[5], 12-4[5], and NCCU, 10-6. Kendra Saunders leads the UMES (4-10) offense with 12 RBIs, nine hits, eight runs, four homeruns, and a .700 slugging percentage. Bonnie Heineken is first on the team with a .316 batting average and a .458 on base percentage. Cassandra Carlos is tops on the team in extra base hits (5). Starting pitcher Mishayla Truttman is first in wins (3), strikeouts (31), innings pitched (28.1), opponents batting average (.305), and lowest earned run average (6.99). TENNIS The men and women's tennis teams remained winless on the season with a pair of losses coming to Loyola (Md.) [7-0] and Morgan State [7-0] each. UMES opened conference play at 0-1. Rashad James played well against Loyola's Scott Gannon, 6-1, 6-1, while Harold Fowler did the same in a match with Morgan State's Joaquin Turley, 8-2. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL In other news, the women's basketball had their season come to an end with a 56-49 loss to Hampton University in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament. UMES (17-13) was led by April McBride with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Queenique Tyler, the only other Lady Hawk in double digits, added 10 points. Seniors Brittany Adkins, Kristi Veltkamp, and Jelila Abdul-Bassit all played in their final game. Adkins finished with four points and eight rebounds, while Veltkamp had two points and Abdul-Bassit grabbed one board. The Lady Hawks also cleaned up some conference postseason awards as Casey Morton nabbed MEAC Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team honors. Teammates McBride and Tiffany Reid were selected to the All-MEAC First and Second Teams, respectively. MEN'S BASKETBALL Meanwhile, the men's basketball team season ended after a 70-61 loss to Florida A&M in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament. Ed Tyson sparked UMES (4-27) with 28 points, while Marc Davis added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Omar Akram chipped in with eight points and five boards in his first career start. Aleksandar Popovic recorded two blocks in his return to action from an injured foot but played just six minutes. Seniors Jahmal Bivins and Brandon Moore played in their final game. Bivins and Moore finished with four and two points, respectively, while both added six rebounds. BJ Nimocks, UMES' one true senior, did not play due to a broken nose suffered in the game against Delaware State. Two Hawks earned postseason awards with Tyson being selected to the All-MEAC Second Team and Davis earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team. UPCOMING MEET The UMES outdoor track teams will compete at the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, March 29. UPCOMING TOURNAMENT The UMES bowling team will take a couple of weeks off to prepare for the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla. on April 10-12. UPCOMING MATCHES The UMES women's tennis team travels up the road to take on Bowie State on Saturday, March 29 starting at 1:00 p.m. The men and women's teams then travel to Easton, Pa. to face Lafayette on Sunday, March 30 starting at noon. The men then head to Dover, Del. for a match against Wesley College on Tuesday, April 1 beginning at 3:30 p.m. The women follow with a home contest against Trinity (D.C.) on Friday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES The UMES baseball team heads to Dover, Del. for a three-game series against Delaware State on March 29 and 30. They open with a doubleheader on day one beginning at noon, while day two is also scheduled for a noon start. The team then travels to Morgantown for a doubleheader contest with West Virginia on Tuesday, April 1 starting at 1:00 p.m. UPCOMING SOFTBALL GAMES The UMES softball team will travel to Virginia for a five-game swing beginning with a three-game set against Hampton on March 29 and 30. They open with a doubleheader on day one starting at 1:00 p.m., while day two is also penciled in for a 1:00 p.m. start. The team then faces Norfolk State in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2. The action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. |
