PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a host of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. WOMEN'S BOWLING The UMES bowling team captured their third consecutive MEAC Championship after defeating #11 Delaware State University (DSU) 4-1 in a best of seven baker game format in the finals. Their two loses came to DSU in the championship and Norfolk State in the semi-finals. They won 4-0 in every other match. The Lady Hawks took home several accolades as Kristina Frahm was named MEAC Most Outstanding Performer and to the All-Tournament Team along with fellow freshman Maria Rodriguez. Head Coach Sharon Brummell also earned MEAC Most Outstanding Coach. Frahm had a tournament average of 188.5, while Rodriguez was right behind her with a 184. Brummell led UMES (113-23) to their fourth overall title and fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament. OUTDOOR TRACK The UMES outdoor track teams are off to a good start after performing well at the Wake Forest Open. The meet did not feature team scoring. On the men's side, the 4x400 meter relay team of Dexter Miller, Paul Jones-Burden, Thomas Keane-Dawes, and Corey Alexander took fourth place with a time of 3:13.97 as they edged out North Carolina. Allodin Fothergill also showed well in the 100 and 200-meter dashes after finishing with times of 10.82 and 21.19, respectively, good enough for eight and fourth overall. Fothergill's 200-meter time qualified him for NCAA Regional's. Peter Sang finished second in the 3,000 meter steeple chase after crossing the line in 9:22.10. In the field events, James Moore and Jamahl Strachan took fourth and fifth in the high jump with jumps of 1.97 meters each. For the women, Tanisha Wisdom finished third with a time of 12.01 in the 100-meter dash, while Merrecia James had a strong debut in the 5,000 (17:49.56) meter run, placing third. James along with Tamica Thomas (18:50.48), Betty Chumbe (19:24.74), and Janeth Chelangat (19:29.02) all qualified for the MEAC outdoor championships. The Lady Hawks were strong in the field events as Rashida Beckford set a personal record and finished tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 1.63 meters, while Saisha Woodward claimed fifth in the shot put following a throw of 13.24 meters. BASEBALL In other action, the baseball team rattled off four second consecutive wins after sweeping Coppin State (11-7, 7-6, 18-12) in a weekend series to move to 3-0 in conference play and splitting a two-game set against St. Peter's (11-8, 4-12). Remo Orsini leads the Hawks with a .318 batting average and 27 hits, while Pat Hercinger is tops with 23 RBIs, and tied for first with Phil Vaughn in walks (10) and on base percentage (.398). Vaughn is also first with 23 runs, while Ryan Coppi paces the team with a .370 slugging percentage. Coppi has been solid out of the bullpen as he leads the team in lowest earned run average (4.50) in just two appearances. Elliott Arrington has made the most appearances (12), Matt Witte is first in innings pitched (33.2), Dan Sterling remains on top with 33 strikeouts, and Jervonta' Wright has the lowest opponent batting average at .222 to round out the other major categories. Mike Roberts, Carl Huber, Witte, and Arrington each have one win, while Coppi, Sterling, and Russel Deutschmann all have a save. SOFTBALL Meanwhile, the softball team finished runners-up in the Lady Pirates Tournament after losing 14-1 to host Hampton in the championship and posting a 3-4 record. UMES (7-14) posted wins over Elizabeth City State (18-6[5], 22-0[4]) and Morgan State (6-5). Kendra Saunders continues to lead the UMES offense with 22 RBIs, 22 hits, 21 runs, five homeruns, and a .649 slugging percentage. Shakeyah Habib has the highest batting average (.455) and on base percentage (.571, while Cassandra Carlos is tops in extra base hits (9). Starting pitcher Mishayla Truttman is first in wins (3), strikeouts (48), and opponents' batting average (.316). Bonnie Heineken has the lowest earned run average (8.27), most appearances (12), complete games (7), and innings pitched (49). Heineken and Marielle Garcia have two wins apiece. TENNIS The men and women's tennis teams dropped a pair of matches to Delaware State (7-0) and Hampton (7-0). Both teams fell to 0-3 in conference play. For the men, Rashad James played a tough match against Oleg Mironchikov, 6-1, 6-2, while Dorian Thomas and Harold Fowler also fell in singles play 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 to Alexy Chibsov and Milos Velckovic, respectively. On the women's side, Bolanle Abioye performed well in number two singles before falling, 6-0, 6-1 and also in number one doubles with teammate Fatoumata Ba as they lost 8-3 to Hanna Adewumi and Julieta Yung. Brigette Squire picked up the only point for the Lady Hawks against Hampton with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat coming to Maya Morgan. UPCOMING MEET The UMES outdoor track teams will compete at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on April 2-5. UPCOMING TOURNAMENT The UMES bowling team will take a week to prepare for the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla. on April 10-12. UPCOMING MATCHES The UMES men and women's tennis teams will travel up the road to face Mount St. Mary's on April 5 before returning home for a conference match against Howard on April 6. Both contests are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES The UMES baseball team heads to Norfolk for a weekend series against Norfolk State on April 5 and 6. They open with a doubleheader on day one starting at 1:00 p.m., while day two is scheduled for a noon start. The team then returns home for a single game affair against Georgetown on April 8 beginning at 3:00 p.m. UPCOMING SOFTBALL GAMES The UMES softball team will travel to Dover for a three-game series with Delaware State on April 5 and 6. Day one features a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., while day two is also scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. The team then returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against Coppin State on April 9 starting at 1:00 p.m. |
