PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a host of teams compete over the past week.

OUTDOOR TRACK

The UMES outdoor track teams continued their seasons at two separate events.

In the women's track events at the Raleigh Relays, Celia Whyte (2:11.43) and Merrecia James (2:11.87) finished second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run. They finished ahead of runners from Seton Hall, North Carolina, and Virginia. Additionally, Danai Lendor came in 10th with a time of 1:02.58 in the 400-meter hurdles. The highlight featured the 4x400 meter relay team cruising past the competition to a first place finish of 3:43.71, almost two seconds faster than second place Charlotte.

Meanwhile, Saisha Woodward showed well in the shot put, finishing 11th with a throw of 13.22 meters.

For the men, Allodin Fothergill was impressive once more in the 200-meter dash as he took first with a time of 21.45, a hundredth of a second faster than the second place finisher from North Carolina State. Also, Peter Sang (9:20.17) finished seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The 4x400 and 4x200 meter relay teams claimed first and eighth with times of 3:16.66 and 1:30.47, respectively.

The individuals competing at the DSU Hornet Invitational were solid as well.

In the women's field events, Jocelyn Wheeler (11.82m), Soledad Maurice (11.71m), and Tiona Long (11.50m) took fifth, sixth, and eighth, correspondingly in the shot put. The same trio of Long (35.73m), Wheeler (34.75m), and Maurice (34.30m) came in fifth thru seventh in the discus throw, while Wheeler (21.07m) had a sixth place finish in the javelin throw.

As for the men, both Jamahl Strachan (26.85m) and Anthony Tolliver (18.50m) finished one-two, respectively, in the discus throw. Strachan also took first in the pole vault (3.99m). James Moore took a pair of second place finishes in the triple jump (14.12m) and high jump (1.93m).

Thacious Freeman found success on the track in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles as he crossed fourth and fifth in 16.60 and 1:00.08. Solomon Kirongo took second overall in the 5,000 meter run (16:24.91).

BASEBALL

In other action, the baseball team captured one-of-three from Delaware State University (2-1 [8]) to move to 4-2 in MEAC play. They dropped the remaining pair to DSU (12-7, 14-2), while suffering a loss to Long Island (11-0) and two defeats against West Virginia (23-7, 18-1).

Jorge Pichardo leads the Hawks with a .338 batting average, nine doubles, and a .455 slugging percentage in 22 games. Ryan Coppi and Pat Hercinger are tied for most hits at 31 apiece, while Hercinger is tops with 24 RBI, 16 walks, and an on-base percentage of .405. Phil Vaughn claims the honor of most runs and triples with two each. Vaughn also is first in hit by pitches (9), stolen bases (14), and fielding percentage (.980).

Coppi continues to lead the team in lowest earned run average (4.50) in two appearances, while Elliott Arrington has made the most appearances (13). Mike Roberts has compiled the most wins (2), innings pitched (39.1), and lowest opponent batting average (.284). Dan Sterling carries the distinction of most strikeouts (34).

SOFTBALL

Meanwhile, the softball team fell twice each to Hampton (7-2, 11-2[5]) and Norfolk State (9-1[5], 9-0[6]).

Offensively, UMES (7-18, 0-2 MEAC) has five batters hitting over .300, including Kendra Saunders with a team-high .388 average. Saunders also leads the team in total bases (42), hits (26), RBI (23), runs (22), homeruns (5), and slugging percentage (.627). Cassandra Carlos has the most doubles (7), triples (3), and stolen bases (4), while Marielle Garcia is tops on the team in on-base percentage (.500). Mishayla Truttman has a team-best 11 walks.

Truttman is first in wins (3), strikeouts (55), innings pitched (57.1) and opponents' batting average (.318). Bonnie Heineken has the lowest earned run average (6.36) and is tied with Truttman for most appearances (13) and complete games (8). Heineken and Garcia have two wins apiece.

TENNIS

The men and women's tennis teams both had to forfeit against Lafayette, while the men suffered a tough loss to Wesley (8-1).

The Hawks picked up their only win of the match via Rashad James who topped Ken Reilly 6-4, 6-1. James and doubles partner Dorian Thomas almost captured another point at the top duo spot, but narrowly lost to Andrew Smyth and Reilly 9-7. Harold Fowler and William Ntirenganya also played strong at number two doubles, falling 8-2 against Mickey DeSouza and Will Johnson.

Both teams were competitive in the remaining singles matches as Thomas was defeated by DeSouza 6-3, 6-1, while Fowler got upended against Adee Bautista 6-4, 6-4. Moreover, Ntirenganya and Michael Davenport both fell to Smyth and Luke Melillo by the scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.

UPCOMING MEET

The UMES outdoor track teams will compete at the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invite in Charlottesville, Va. on April 12.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENT

The UMES bowling team vie for the NCAA Championship in Orlando, Fla. on April 10-12.

UPCOMING MATCHES

The UMES men and women's tennis teams host Coppin State in their final conference match of the year on April 11 before welcoming District of Columbia on April 13. Both contests are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The teams then travel to face Lincoln (Pa.) on April 15 beginning at 2:00 p.m., which will conclude the men's regular season. The women end their season on the road with a make-up contest against Trinity (D.C.) on April 18 starting at 3:00 p.m.

UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES

The UMES baseball team hosts a conference tripleheader against North Carolina A&T on April 12 and 13. The action is slated to start at noon on both days. The Team then travels up the road to face Mount St. Mary's and Maryland in a pair of single game affairs on April 15 and 16 at 3:30 and 7:00 p.m., respectively.

UPCOMING SOFTBALL GAMES

The UMES softball team will face conference foe Morgan State in a three-game weekend series on April 12 and 13. The team remains at home for a non-conference doubleheader against Norfolk State on April 16. All three days are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. starts.
