PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a couple of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. BASEBALL The baseball team had their three-game series with Norfolk State and single-game affair against Georgetown postponed due to rain. A doubleheader matchup with the Spartans has been scheduled for April 24 starting at noon. Both teams will determine at a later date if the third game is to be made up pending conference standings, while the Georgetown contest has yet to be rescheduled. SOFTBALL Meanwhile, the softball team dropped a three-game set to Delaware State (13-2[5], 10-1[5], 5-2). The losses moved UMES to 7-21 overall and 0-5 in MEAC play. After taking an early lead in the series opener, UMES (7-20, 0-4) gave up 13 unanswered runs in a 13-2 five inning decision against the Lady Hornets. The Lady Hawks amassed just one hit whereas DSU pounded out 14 base knocks. Brittney Ruark picked up the complete game win for DSU, allowing two earned runs to go along with five strikeouts, while Mishayla Truttman took the loss as she gave up eight runs (five earned) in two and two third innings of work. Truttman was responsible for the only UMES offensive production, finishing a flawless one-of-one, with two RBI, a run, and walk. In game two, the bats kept rolling for DSU as they cranked out 11 hits to just two from the Lady Hawks in a 10-1 five inning decision. Megan Lambertz went the distance to collect the win for DSU, giving up one earned run and tossing out six strikeouts, while Bonnie Heineken threw four hard innings in the losing cause for the Lady Hawks as she gave up 10 runs (eight earned). The Lady Hawks offense was led once more by Truttman who finished one-of-two with the lone RBI. Kendra Saunders added the other hit on top of a run. In the series finale, UMES (7-21, 0-5 MEAC) fell behind first but would keep it close the whole way through as they battled back and forth in the late innings. In the end however, DSU just had enough to get it done as they cranked out 10 hits and took advantage of mistakes from the Lady Hawks who accumulated six base knocks and two costly errors. Ruark went the distance to pick up the win for DSU, allowing two runs (one earned) to go along with 10 strikeouts, while Marielle Garcia gave up five runs (one earned) in the losing effort. On the offensive end, UMES was led by Saunders who finished two-of-three at the plate, including a triple. Teammate Ashlee Baker was credited with the lone RBI. For the season, the Lady Hawks are led by Saunders who is batting a team-high .397. Saunders also leads the team in total bases (48), hits (29), RBI (23), runs (25), homeruns (5), slugging percentage (.658), and on-base percentage (.482).
