PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a couple of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. OUTDOOR TRACK The UMES outdoor track teams competed at two different meets this past weekend. One group headed west to the Sun Angel Classic held by Arizona State, who happens to be the defending men and women's indoor track and field NCAA Champions. Highlighting the men's events were Paul Jones-Burden who took ninth overall in the 400-meter dash, running 48.35. Jones-Burden combines with Thomas Keane-Dawes, Corey Alexander, and Clayton James to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:14.70. The women also had a good showing. Tanisha Wisdom qualified for the NCAA regional competition in the 400-meter dash as she crossed in 53.50, good enough for fourth place. Two 800-meter runners placed in the top ten for the Lady Hawks. Merrecia James also qualified for the NCAA regional meet after finishing second with a time of 2:07.87, while Celia Whyte ran 2:10.20, placing her ninth in the field. In Virginia, others competed at the University of Virgina's Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational. There the duo of Peter Sang and Amon Kiprotich captured second and fourth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run with times of 15:08.36 and 15:34.12. Teammate Solomon Kirongo garnered ninth as he crossed the 3,000-meter steeplechase finish line in 10:18.21. Not to be outdone, James Moore also took two third place finishes in the triple jump and high jump as he set marks of 14.35 meters in the triple jump and 2.00 meters in the high jump. Jamahl Strachan earned fourth overall in the high jump for his leap of 1.95 meters. On the women's side, Saisha Woodward placed fourth in both the javelin and shot put field events with throws of 40.32 and 13.60 meters, respectively. Also showing well was Tiona Long who finished eighth in the discus following a throw of 39.41 meters. BASEBALL The baseball team has now dropped ten consecutive games with recent losses coming against North Carolina A&T (12-7[10], 6-2[9]), Mount St. Mary's (10-0), Maryland (14-1), and Florida A&M (9-1, 9-7, 8-4). UMES now sits at 5-33 overall and fifth in conference play with a 4-7 mark. They are led by Jorge Pichardo with a .311 batting average, 11 doubles, and a .417 slugging percentage. Phil Vaughn leads the team in hits (39), runs (33), triples (2), total bases (48), hit by pitches (11), on-base percentage (.406), stolen bases (18), and fielding percentage (.983). Pat Hercinger is tops on the team in RBI (27) and walks (23). On the mound, Elliott Arrington claims the honor of lowest earned run average (5.62), appearances (16), and innings pitched (49.2). Mike Roberts has picked up the most wins (2) while obtaining the lowest opponent batting average (.297). Ken Richardson has made the most starts (9) and Dan Sterling carries the honor of most strikeouts (37). SOFTBALL Meanwhile, the softball team has now fell in 15 straight games after suffering losses to Morgan State (8-2, 7-3), Norfolk State (9-1[6], 15-2[5]), Delaware State (9-3, 11-6), and Hampton (12-4[5]). The Lady Hawks now stand 7-28 overall with a 0-8 conference mark. Kendra Saunders has a team-high .366 batting average, while also leading the team in hits (30), runs (27), homeruns (5), RBI (23), total bases (49), slugging percentage (.598), and on-base percentage (.453). Cassandra Carlos has the most doubles (9) and triples (3). Mishayla Truttman has a team-best 14 walks. On the hill, Truttman has the lowest earned run average (7.42) and opponent's batting average (.326) while holding the most wins (3) and strikeouts (65). Bonnie Heineken is tops on the team in appearances (19), complete games (10), and innings pitched (78). TENNIS The men and women's tennis teams both concluded their seasons this past week. The Lady Hawks picked up their first win of the year over District of Columbia (6-3). However, they would fall to Mount St. Mary's (9-0), Distritct of Columbia (8-1), Virginia State (9-0), Howard (7-0), Coppin State (6-1), and Trinity D.C. (5-4) to finish the season 1-12 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The Hawks did not fare as well as they dropped matches to Mount St. Mary's (9-0), District of Columbia (6-2, 7-2), Virginia State (9-0), Howard (6-1), and Coppin State (5-2) to conclude the year with a 0-16 mark and 0-5 record in conference. UPCOMING MEET The UMES outdoor track teams will compete at the MEAC Championships in Baltimore, Md. on May 1-3. UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES The UMES baseball team will head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face Bethune-Cookman in a three-game set on April 26 and 27 beginning at noon on both days with Saturday penciled in for a doubleheader. They then take on George Washington in a pair of single game affairs on April 29 and 30 at 3:00 p.m. The teams will play once at each other's venue. UPCOMING SOFTBALL GAMES The UMES softball team will host Coppin State in a four-game series on April 26 and 27. The action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. on each day with the first three counted as conference games. |
