PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a couple of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. OUTDOOR TRACK The UMES outdoor track team competed at the Morgan State Legacy Meet this past weekend. The women took fourth out of 10 teams, while the men came in seventh in a 12 team field. On the men's side, Allodin Fothergill shined in the 400-meter dash as he qualified for NCAA regionals with a first place finish of 46.40. Both Amon Kiprotich and Peter Sang concluded the 1500-meter run with new personal records of 4:03.76 and 4:04.61, respectively, placing them sixth and seventh. The team of Thomas Kean-Dawes, Fothergill, Paul Jones-Burden, and Corey Alexander combined to run their fastest time of the year in the 4x400 meter relay with a fifth place finish of 3:12.97. Former UMES standout Jason Daley, who was competing in the meet unattached, placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.50 meters. Current Hawk, Charles Elmer also competed in the event and finished eighth with a 6.76 meters jump. James Moore showed well in the high jump after a 1.98 meter mark earned him second place. Moore then triple jumped 13.77 meters, good enough for eighth place. The women also performed well as the team of Sherie Brown, Celia Whyte, Merrecia James, and Tanisha Wisdom broke the school record in the 4x400 meter relay and qualified for NCAA regionals with a time of 3:40.50. Wisdom was also dominant individually. She took fourth in the 100-meter dash after crossing the line in 12.18 seconds, however; it was former Lady Hawk Danieth Pryce who finished slightly ahead with a time of 11.96, which earned her second overall. Both James and Whyte impressed in the 1500-meter run placed first and third, respectively, with times of 4:40.51 and 4:53.73. In the field events, Saisha Woodward took second as she recorded a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 13.80 meters. Tiona Long took ninth in the same event following a throw of 11.67 meters. BASEBALL The baseball team fell to Navy (5-1) and Norfolk State (8-3, 8-1) to drop to 5-36 overall and 4-9 in conference play. UMES' pitching was solid in the loss to the in-state rival Midshipmen. Russel Deutschmann, who normally starts at first base, allowed 11 hits and four earned runs in the losing effort. The Hawks were led by Jorge Pichardo who went two-of-four at the plate, with an RBI and run off his first homerun of the season. Pat Hercinger recorded the other base knock. Navy was paced by Thomas Hamilton and Bill Guadagnini with two hits and an RBI each. UMES could not break their skid as they were upended twice by the Spartans. The Hawks chose to save their weekend rotation and sent two relievers to the mound instead. Brian White suffered the loss in his first start as he gave up 12 hits and eight runs (four earned) in all eight innings of work. On offense, UMES was sparked by Remo Orsini with a pair of hits and RBI to go along with a run. Phil Vaughn also recorded two base knocks and a run, while Pichardo plated one. The Spartans Brandon Hairston and Moriba George finished with three hits each, while Hairston added two RBI and runs apiece. UMES would have liked the outcome of game two to be different, but it was fairly similar. Daniel Sterling took the loss, allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs. The Hawks' Ken Richardson plated the only run of the game as both Josh Dunham and Orsini finished with a couple of hits each. Five different Spartans picked up two hits apiece and Chase Bailey had three RBI. SOFTBALL The softball team was blanked twice in a non-conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's University (MOUNT) on Wednesday. The Lady Hawks dropped the opener 11-0 and fell in the rubber match 5-0. Marielle Garcia took the loss as she gave up three hits, six runs (four earned), and walked five. U MES (7-30) picked up their only two hits of the contest from Cassandra Carlos and Tiana Strother. Amanda Burk led the way for the Mount with a pair of hits, RBI, and runs. Teammate Jenna Zimmerman also chipped in with two base knocks, a run, and RBI. Game two was more closely contested but the Lady Hawks inability to score was the determinant in the end. Mishayla Truttman allowed nine hits and five earned runs in the losing cause. UMES' Chelsea Logan, Dawnita Leigh, and Ashley Johnson each had a hit. Courtney Zingle paced the Mountaineers by going two-of-three at the plate, with four RBI and a run, while Vadas had two hits and plated a run.
