PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had a couple of teams compete over the past week. For a complete recap and/or results visit www.umeshawks.com. OUTDOOR TRACK The UMES outdoor track team competed in the Penn Relays this past weekend at Franklin Field. On the men's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Allodin Fothergill, Paul Jones-Burden, Thomas Keane-Dawes, and Corey Alexander set a mark of 3:11.82 in the prelims. Dexter Miller replaced Fothergill in the finals to compromise an all-freshman team, which wound up taking seventh overall with a time of 3:17.59. The 4x200 meter relay team of Miller, Fothergill, Jones-Burden, and Keane-Dawes ran well in the prelims, crossing in 1:27.29 for sixth place. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Celia Whyte, Merrecia James, Danai Lendor, and Tanisha Wisdom were also impressive as they claimed fourth in the finals with a time of 3:43.26. Sherie Brown, Wisdom, Whyte, and James showed well in the sprint-medley relay, running 3:55.58 for a seventh place finish. BASEBALL The baseball team was upended against Bethune-Cookman (19-0, 11-3, 23-3), George Washington (7-2, 4-1), and East Tennessee State (29-2, 23-6, 16-2), dropping them to 5-44 overall and 4-12 in conference play. UMES is led at the plate by Ryan Coppi with a .281 batting average. Jorge Pichardo is the team leader in doubles (12) and slugging percentage (.383), while teammate Phil Vaughn is tops in runs (37), hits (48), triples (3), total bases (59), hit by pitches (12), stolen bases (21), on-base percentage (.382), and fielding percentage (.981). Pat Hercinger has plated the most runs (28). Starting pitcher Mike Roberts has the lowest team earned run average (5.73) on the mound, while also leading the team in wins (2). Dan Sterling has thrown the most strikeouts (48). Elliott Arrington is first in appearances (19). Ken Richardson take the honor of most starts (10). Matt Witte has compiled the most innings pitched (57.2). Carl Huber has held opponents' to the lowest batting average (.294). SOFTBALL The softball team picked up three key wins over Coppin State (9-0, 14-1, 18-3) before falling to Howard (7-5, 8-0, 18-4) and Morgan State (10-0) to end the regular season at 10-34 overall and 3-12 in conference play. The Lady Hawks doubled their win total from last season. Kendra Saunders led UMES in six offensive categories, including batting average (.366), runs (27), homeruns (5), RBI (23), slugging percentage (.598), and on-base percentage (.453), despite suffering a season-ending injury. Freshman Cassandra Carlos started 42 of 43 games and had the most hits (36), doubles (12), triples (3), total bases (54), and stolen bases (9). Chelsea Logan, another newcomer, had a team-best .984 fielding percentage, while Dawnita Leigh was tops on the team in walks (19). Mishayla Truttman finished with a career-high four wins on the mound to lead the Lady Hawks pitching staff. She also set a personal best for most strikeouts (80) on the team, while allowing the fewest earned runs (83). Freshman Bonnie Heineken concluded the season with the lowest earned run average (6.79) as well as the most innings pitched (98) and complete games (12). Marielle Garcia and Heineken each had three wins. UPCOMING MEET The UMES outdoor track teams will take a week off before they head to compete in the Georgia Tech Last Chance Invite in Atlanta, Ga. on May 16 and 17. UPCOMING BASEBALL GAMES The UMES baseball team will travel to Lexington, Va. on May 9, 10, and 11 for a weekend series with VMI. The first two games are slated to begin at 6:00 p.m., while the series finale will start at 1:00 p.m. The Hawks then conclude their season with conference contests against Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T on May 12 in Norfolk, Va. The make-up dates will be part of a doubleheader with the Hawks taking on the Spartans at 11:00 a.m., followed by a matchup with the Aggies at 3:00 p.m. |
