HAWKS COMPETE IN OUTRAGEOUS OLYMPICS
Aug. 31, 2011
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.--If you visited the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday you might have wondered what all of the laughing and boisterous commotion was all about, but everything was under control-for the most part. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department held its "Outrageous Olympics" Monday, an annual welcome back party for new and returning student-athletes. Outrageous Olympics is run by a company of the same name that is based in Richmond, Va.
Outrageous Olympics runs Olympic-style games and contests while the athletics department provided food for the more than 160 excited Hawks. The Outrageous Olympics event began four years ago as an initiative to introduce student-athletes to one another outside of their sport.
"It gives the kids time to be social and make new friends with student-athletes that play other sports," said Sharon Brummell, senior woman administrator and head coach for bowling. "It's exciting to see the new faces, they exhilarate the teams and get you excited about the upcoming year," stated Coach Brummell.
Department Athletic Director, Keith Davidson, gave the closing remarks which spoke to the department's support of all of its student-athletes on the field of competition and in the classroom.
"Things like this show us that the athletics department is a family, that whether it is a teammate or an administrator you have someone that is there for you," said Mark Robertson, a senior on the men's basketball team.
One of the many games played by the student-athletes was "flipper flash". Imagine wearing swimming flippers and running 20 yards wearing swim goggles. Although the games were quite quirky, all of the contests were designed for team building and for the enjoyment of everyone involved.
"The games are fun, it's like being a kid again but it is all team work," Robertson stated.
With the school year beginning Wednesday, both the men's and women's cross country teams as well as volleyball will compete this upcoming weekend to kick-off fall sports. On Friday, Sept. 2 remember to wear maroon and grey as it will mark College Colors Day.
Cross country will host The Hampton Inn Salisbury North/UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 3 beginning at 10 AM. Volleyball will travel to Tampa, Fla. to compete against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 2.
