PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore cross country hosted their second meet of the season Saturday with the Cappy Anderson Invitational and the volleyball team traveled to Pittsburgh for the Pitt Blue-Gold Invitational.

CROSS COUNTRY

The men's team placed eighth out of 11 teams with 238 points and an average team time of 31:28.35 in the eight-kilometer race.

Junior Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) placed first for UMES and 28th overall with a time of 26:20.67, which was his best of the season so far. Fellow junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) had a time of 27:19.35, which was good for 51st overall. The next UMES finisher was senior Solomon Kirongo (Nairobi, Kenya) with an 84th overall finish with a time of 29:23.71.

Junior Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.J.) was 101st overall with a time of 36:07.82. Freshman Terrance Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) and senior James Moore (Manassas, Va.) were 104th and 105th respectively with times of 38:10.20 and 38:47.12. Sophomores Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) and Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) had times of 38:50.46 and 38:50.61 respectively, which were good for 106th and 107th places.

The women's team placed sixth out of nine teams with 137 points and an average team time of 21:15.13 in the five-kilometer race.

Senior Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica) finished 28th overall and first for UMES with a time of 20:04.04. Sophomore Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) and junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) followed right behind Whyte for 29th and 30th places with respective times of 20:10.45 and 20:11.42.

Sophomore Jessica Abrantes (Scotch Plains, N.Y.) ran a time of 22:16.25, which was good for 51st overall. Emalie Ducades and freshman Kenesha Abrams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came in 58th and 59th places with times of 23:33.49 and 23:38.62, respectively. The next UMES finisher was freshman Jennell Wade (White Plains, Md.) in 65th place with a time of 24:52.60. Sophomore Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) and freshman Courtney Gray (Frederick, Md.) came in 72nd and 73rd places with respective times of 27:55.10 and 28:56.48.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team traveled to Pittsburgh this weekend to compete in the Pitt Blue-Gold Tournament at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.

Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) recorded a match-high 11 kills and added six digs but Valparaiso snapped UMES's four-match winning streak, defeating the Hawks 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-20).

Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) and redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied eight kills apiece as UMES fell to 8-4 on the season. Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) had a match-best 31 assists and also chipped in with eight digs. Fellow freshman Karin Vikterlof (Orebro, Sweden) led the Hawks with nine digs.

Chukwura had a .462 hitting percentage (eight kills, two errors, 13 total attacks) to lead UMES.

UMES outlasted Youngstown State 3-2 (20-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-21, 20-18) in a thriller to open Day Two on Sunday.

Johnson recorded a season-high 26 kills while Woodward tallied 13 kills and a match-high 21 digs.

Romero had 64 assists and 12 digs for a pair of double-doubles. The Hawks now have nine double-doubles on the year.

Chukwura was the third UMES player in double digits in kills with 10 while senior Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) had nine apiece.

Vikterlof chipped in with 14 digs for the Hawks who moved to 9-4 on the season.

Woodward registered her 1,000-career kill on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated UMES 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-13).

The six-foot outside hitter needed 25 kills coming into the weekend to reach the milestone and did so with a swing assisted by Romero to tie the second game, 10-10.

Woodward finished with a team-high-tying eight kills with fellow senior and the Hawks' lone all-tournament team selection Johnson as UMES fell to 9-5 on the season.

Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) and Vikterlof had six digs apiece and Romero chipped in with 29 assists against the Panthers.

UPCOMING WEEK (Sept. 20-27)

The men's and women's cross country teams have off next weekend and return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Mason Invitational in Centreville, Va.

Volleyball prepares for its home-opening Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center against Sacred Heart and Norfolk State.
