BROWN, BOOZER NAMED FINALISTS FOR BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Black College Football Hall of Fame announced the 25 finalists for its most recent hall of fame class and former University of Maryland Eastern Shore running back Emerson Boozer and lineman Roger Brown were each on the ballot, it was announced Tuesday. The Hall of Fame selections will be part of the fifth annual enshrinement ceremony, hosted by the Atlanta Falcons on March 1, 2014.
The finalists were selected from a field of over 125 nominees by an 11-member selection committee comprised of prominent journalists, historians and football executives. The committee will meet again in the coming weeks to select the seven members (six players and one coach/contributor) to be inducted as the Class of 2014.
The Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be announced on Oct. 23.
Boozer was a four-year letterman and served as the primary running back for Head Coach Vernon "Skip" McCain. Aside from being a two-time First Team All-America by the Pittsburgh Courier, Boozer amassed 2,537 yards and 22 touchdowns during his career. He averaged a remarkable 6.78 yards per carry and was named a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) All- Conference pick in 1964 and '65. He was also inducted into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hall of Fame in 1982.
Brown led UMES to the CIAA title in 1957 and was twice named an NAIA All-American in 1958 and 1959. A two-time Pittsburgh Courier Negro All-American selection, the Hawks posted a 24-5-1 record and outscored their opponents, 693-213, in his four years. He also anchored the Hawks' defensive line that limited opponents to 7.3 points per game.
Brown was a fourth-round selection of the NFL's Detroit Lions in 1960 and played there until 1967 before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams and becoming a part of the Rams' famed "Fearsome Foursome." He was named the 1962 National Football League Pro Lineman of the Year and was selected to the Pro Bowl six times.
