Sept. 28, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) has been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 27.
Johnson, an outside hitter on the women's volleyball team, helped the Hawks to 1-1 record in their home-opening Hampton Inn Salisbury North Invitational. UMES fell to Sacred Heart, 3-0, before defeating Norfolk State, 3-0, to close the day.
Johnson had 18 kills on 43 total attacks for a .279 hitting percentage on her way to being named to the all-tournament team. She also had four digs and one block assist.
Johnson was 12-for-22 from the floor against the Spartans for a .409 attack percentage. It was the 14 consecutive time since 2002 the Hawks beat Norfolk State.
UMES (10-6) next plays North Carolina Central in Hampton Va. Friday at 1 p.m. and Winston-Salem State Sunday at 4:30. |
