PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's and women's cross-country teams each finished fourth at the Towson Invitational Friday while women’s volleyball swept their first weekend of conference play, solidifying their spot at the top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division.

CROSS COUNTRY

The UMES women scored 91 points behind only Towson (41 points), the University of Albany (45 points) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (90 points). Merrecia James was fourth individually in 18:43, the top Hawks' finisher, men or women.

Peter Sang finished eighth for the men.


The UMES men tallied 129 points on the day and were beaten by only UMBC (23 points), Mount St. Mary's (64 points) and Albany (65 points). Peter Sang finished seventh for the men in 26:51.

The women placed four more runners in the top-30 spots for the 5K course. Eunice Jones was 22nd in 20:09, Cynthia Anais crossed 24th in 20:16, Celia Whyte was 27th in 20:28 and Tamica Thomas crossed 30th in 20:50.

Other scorers for the UMES men for their 8K were Shadrock Maritim. Who was 16th in 28:01, Solomon Kirongo, who was 24th in 28:47, Jerome Pyuzza, who was 49th, and Paul Jones-Burden, who was 80th in 34:45.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Christina Estebané averaged 36 assists per match over the weekend.


Christina Estebané and Christine Edwards continued to shine, as they helped the Lady Hawks top MEAC rival Morgan State 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) in their home opener and first conference game of the season.

Estebané finished with a game-high 33 assists. Edwards was top on the attack with a game-high 14 kills. Leah Amundson was key for the Lady Hawks finishing with game-highs in aces (3) and digs (8).

With their win over Delaware State 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14), the Lady Hawks now boast a 15-6 record and are undefeated in the conference, 2-0. Pushing their win streak to nine, they have set the bar high in the MEAC Northern Division.

Estebané continued her solid play, nearly posting her ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 39 assists and nine digs. Edwards continued her double-digit kill streak with a game-high 17 kills and tied Estebané and Zoe Bowens for the game-high two aces. Amundson led the defense again with a game-high 14 digs.

"We feel good," said Head Coach Don Metil. "We wanted to send a message that when we pass well and hit well we're a really hard team to beat."

UPCOMING MEETS & MATCHES

Both cross-country teams return home for the UMES Hawk Challenge Saturday, Oct. 11 for a 10:30 a.m. start.

The women’s volleyball team is back on the road again, traveling to face the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. This will prove to be a true battle, with the Blue Hens (6-12) defeating Delaware State 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) earlier this season. The match is set for October 8 at 7 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center.
