PRINCESS ANNE, Md.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team capped off the first half of October with two more wins over conference opponents Morgan State and Delaware State. In other action, the men's cross country team came in fifth while the women came in fourth at the Norfolk State University Invitational. Currently, volleyball is riding a 15 match winning streak and is undefeated (17-3, 6-0) in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play as of October 11. They hold a two game lead over Morgan State in the MEAC northern division with four conference games left. Wins over Hampton and Coppin State would clinch the division. Head Track & Field Coach Ernest Barrett kept most of his distance runners home for training regiments and sent limited squads to compete in this past weekends' Norfolk State meet. Although the women came in fourth they still retained first place overall in the MEAC, while the men remained in second place. Volleyball sophomore standout Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) earned her third straight MEAC player of the week honor and fourth overall after helping the Lady Hawks to three conference wins over Howard, Morgan State, and Delaware State. In those three matches Johnson tallied 74 kills and 29 digs while averaging a hitting percentage of .285 in 13 total games. She had a season high 30 kills on 71 total attacks (.268) in the win over Morgan State, while posting 27 kills and 16 digs against Delaware State. Teammate freshman Shaylin Sommer (Atascadero, Calif./ Atascadero H.S.) also earned some recognition from the MEAC as an other top performer for her five aces against Delaware State. Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya/Tulon H.S.) and Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica/G.C. Foster C.C.) both hold the fourth best times in the MEAC for the Hawks cross country teams. Kiprotich finished with a time of 25:26.26 at the UMES Lid Lifter, while James ran 18:37.03 at the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational.
