Oct. 12, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team had a successful week after traveling to both Morgan State and Delaware State and returning with two wins while the cross country teams did not run at all. CROSS COUNTRY The men's and women's cross country teams did not compete at all this past week. VOLLEYBALL Four players recorded at least six kills as the volleyball team topped Morgan State 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-17) in the MEAC opener for both at Hill Field House Tuesday. Sophomore outside hitter Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) led the way for the Hawks with 10 kills while redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied seven and seniors Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados) had six apiece. Johnson also had a match-best six of the Hawks' 11 aces. UMES held Morgan State to just one ace. Joseph also had a match-high four block assists, helping the visitors to a 6-3 advantage in total blocks. Senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) chipped in with a solid all-around effort by registering a team-high 10 digs with five kills and five assists and a hitting efficiency of .333. Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) collected 28 of the team's 35 assists on the night as the Hawks won their third consecutive match. The Hawks extended their winning streak to four on Sunday by defeating Delaware State 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16) at Memorial Hall. Edwards and Johnson each recorded double-digit kills with 13 and 12, respectively. UMES dropped the opening game by seven before reeling off three consecutive games to take the match. Freshman Karin Vikterlof (Orebro, Sweden) had a match-best 17 digs while Woodward was one kill shy of a double-double, registering 12 digs. Woodward and Romero led the team with three aces apiece. Romero also had 39 of the Hawks' 43 assists. UMES improves to 13-6 on the season and 2-0 in MEAC play. UPCOMING WEEK (Oct. 12-19) Hawk Hysteria kicks off the practice seasons for men's and women's basketball on Friday. The event begins immediately following volleyball (approximately 7:30 p.m.). The cross country teams travel to Newark, Del. for the Delaware Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17 before hosting the MEAC Championships on Halloween.
