HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS
Oct. 31, 2011
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The final week of October saw three UMES athletic teams in action. The cross country teams hosted the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships at the UMES Cross Country Course while the volleyball team finished off its MEAC road schedule with a win at Howard University. The successful work by all three teams caps an impressive month in UMES athletics as each program has several key events to begin the month of November.
The UMES cross country team hosted the MEAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. The women claimed third-place honors at the event while the men finished in fourth. The teams saw five runners collect finishes within the top-30 as three of those performers also finished amongst the top five of their respectable races.
The men were led in the 8k race by junior Basil Melek, who placed third with a time of 25:44.60. His time in the event proved to be just 20 seconds shy of the first-place finisher. Junior Zavior Brown placed in 14th place with a time of 27:16.35 before senior Shadrack Maritim finished in 33rd (28:32.40). The top-5 for the men was rounded out by sophomores Donohue Williams (46th, 29:23.23) and Shaquille Turner (51st, 30:03.57). A total of 88 men competed in the event and the Hawks finished with a total score of 142.
The women were paced in the 5k race by Eunice Jones, who finished the highest of any UMES cross country runner with a second-place time of 18:47.35. Her effort was three places higher than the fifth-place finish of senior Cynthia Anais (19:15.13). The women’s score of 99 was greatly influenced by the finishes of sophomore Hana Jiraskova (28th, 20:46.96) and junior Emilie Ducados (30th, 20:54.84). Junior Jennell Wade rounded out the top-5 when she finished in 36th (21:09.00).
Melek’s and Jones’ efforts this week propelled them to being honored as the recipients of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week. It was the fifth time this year Melek has been awarded while Jones’ received the award for the second time. The pair also swept the award on Oct. 10.
With its 3-0 victory over Howard University this past Friday, the UMES volleyball team finished off the month of October undefeated as the squad has won its past 12 matches. The run has seen the team sweep all but four of its contests as not one of the matches has gone to five games. The win also ups their record to 17-6 and 8-0 in the MEAC.
UMES defeated the Lady Bison in three straight games (25-15, 25-19, 27-25) with freshman Saitaua Iosia leading the way with a 19 kill, seven dig performance. Sophomore Maline Vaitai was just short of a double-double with nine kills and nine digs while freshman Jessie Vicic collected 35 assists. Senior Zoe Bowens chipped in with five blocks, five digs and five kills.
