PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Hawks of the past recognized by ESPN.com while the men's basketball team drops their home opener. Women's basketball nearly upset Army and the women's bowling team had a strong showing at the Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) northern division competition. Senior Christina Estebané and junior Neal Pitt were named the UMES Athletes of the Week for the period ending Nov. 16.

Estebané, a setter on the women's volleyball team, led the Lady Hawks to wins over Norfolk State and Delaware State before falling in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball tournament championship match in five sets to Florida A&M.

She totaled 125 assists, 39 digs and 15 kills in the tournament's three matches, earning a spot on the all-tournament team.

Pitt, a junior college transfer and forward on the men's basketball team, had a team-high 14 points with six rebounds in the Hawks' regular-season-opening, 60-44, loss at Stony Brook on Nov. 14.

ALUMNI

In a Nov. 12 article, ESPN.com's Donald Hunt named the All-Time Black College Football Team, placing tackle Art Shell and cornerback Johnny Sample among the prestigious group of 26.

Shell, the first African-American head coach in the NFL modern era, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 after a stellar career with the Oakland-Los Angeles Raiders from 1968-82.

Sample began his professional career in 1958 as a draftee of the Colts. He didn't see much of the field until the 1959 championship game when he intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter returning them 76 yards, including one that was a 42-yard touchdown. That contest is now known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played" after the Colts outlasted the New York Giants, 23-17, in overtime.

In 1960, Sample was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He later spent the 1963 season with the Washington Redskins, but was traded in 1966 to the Jets, his final NFL team.

Neal Pitt had 21 points and 15 rebounds against Longwood.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The UMES men's basketball team dropped its home opener to Longwood, 61-49, at the William P. Hytche Center in front of 1,247 Saturday.

Pitt led all scorers with 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Hawks, who fell to 0-2 on the season. Freshman Keishawn Mayes also tallied double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The women's basketball team could not catch the United States Military Academy at West Point (Army) as they fell 56-43 in their first road trip of the year.

April McBride led the offense with 12 points and seven rebounds. Casey Morton was the only other Lady Hawk in double-digits with 10 points. "What we've scored over the last two games is really not indicative of our capability," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "I think tonight we improved off of Sunday's game, but we have to do a lot better."

WOMEN'S BOWLING

It didn't feature the top teams in the nation, but it was important nonetheless. The UMES women's bowling team had a slow start the first two weekends of the collegiate bowling season but they rebounded this past weekend to post a 9-1 mark against the conference's northern division teams and got solid play all around to post the best mark at the event.

With the wins, UMES improves to 22-11 on the season and the nation's top-ranked team moved into sole possession of second-place in the MEAC Northern Division with a 16-4 conference mark.

Reigning MEAC Bowler of the Week Kristina Frahm posted a 1,022 pin fall over five games. She averaged a 204.4 and had a high game of 245 against rival Delaware State University (DSU). Frahm posted four of her five games on the day over 200 (202, 202, 245, 206).

All-American Maria Rodriguez was also on her game, tallying a 992 for a 198.4 average with a 225 against Morgan State, a 213 vs. DSU Hornets and a 210 against Hampton.

For the second week in a row Frahm was been named the MEAC Bowling Athlete of the Week for the period ending November 16, 2008. This is the third straight honor for a Lady Hawk bowler.
