PRINCESS ANNE, Md - Art Shell, a 1968 graduate of UMES (then Maryland State), was named a finalist for the Black College Hall of Fame. Shell is one of 35 players, coaches and contributors narrowed down from an original field of 260 nominations.

The inaugural class will be announced in January, which will include eight players, two coaches, and one contributor. The enshrinement ceremony will occur on February 20 in Atlanta.

Shell played offensive tackle for the Hawks from 1964-67, before he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League. Shell played 15 seasons with Oakland, appearing in 24 playoff games and two Super Bowls. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989, and had two separate head coaching stints, both with the Raiders.
