PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - With the end of 2008 in sight, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men’s basketball program dropped its sixth loss of the season and the women’s bowling team finished second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division. Sophomore Maria Rodriquez and freshman Keishawn Mayes were named the UMES Athletes of the Week for the period ending December 7.

Rodriguez and the women's bowling team compiled a 9-1 record in team games at the MEAC northern division matches in Baltimore, Md.. The Lady Hawks defeated Morgan State, Howard, Hampton, Coppin State and Delaware State.

WOMEN’S BOWLING

With the MEAC Northern Division Championship on the line, the nation's top ranked team put up a fierce fight. The Lady Hawks came up just short, posting a 9-1 mark, the best at the event. Unfortunately, their one loss came to no. 9 Delaware State University (DSU). While UMES also topped the Hornets at the event, DSU had two total losses, tying with the Hawks for the division title, which DSU won on a head to head basis, having topped UMES four times and falling twice over the course of the season.

On the first day of the event the Lady Hawks rattled off four straight wins, topping Morgan State (980-766), Howard (1009-744), Hampton (920-875) and Coppin State (846-747). Their lone hiccup followed with the loss to DSU 930-981.

In those head to head match-ups, the Lady Hawk stars, like Rodriguez, shone brightly. The reigning National Rookie of the Year Kristina Frahm was on her game, tallying a 976 over her five games, an average of 195. Senior Jamie Culbreth also bowled well with an average of 185 and 921 total pins.

Rodriguez rolled the high game of the day with a 240, while Frahm had a 226. The Hawks rolled nine games over 200 with Frahm, Culbreth, Rodriguez and Sara DiScioscia each accounting for two while Martha Perez posted a 211.
