PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - As college students across the country enjoy their holiday break, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team continued to battle on the road while the women geared up for the first look at a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent. Junior Tiffany Reid was named UMES Athlete of the week for the period ending December 21.

Reid helped lead the women's basketball team to their first win of the season at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) 71-66. She tallied a season-high 18 points shooting 6-of-11 from the floor including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Keishawn Mayes netted a double-double in the Hawks loss to Old Dominion.

Neal Pitt scored a game-high 19 points and Keishawn Mayes added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds as UMES gave Old Dominion a scare, 66-56, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

"We played a pretty good game but Old Dominion was just a bit stronger and a little bit more savvy than we were," UMES Head Coach Frankie Allen said. "I think that, all in all, for us to come down and play within 10 points probably helps us in terms of getting prepared for our upcoming MEAC games."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Freshman standout Kanzes Battin has been stellar off the bench for UMES. The MEAC recognized her effort in the Lady Hawks first win of the season and named Battin Rookie of the Week.

This marks the first conference honor for a Lady Hawk this season. The 6-0 forward leads the team with 37 rebounds and is tied for third in points with 37. Battin was one of four Lady Hawks to post double-digits in the win over NCCU. Netting 12 points, she shot 5-of-7 from the floor and pulled down eight rebounds.

Casey Morton and Reid also received recognition as top performers. The two combined for 28 points, six rebounds and four steals in the win over NCCU.

UPCOMING GAMES

The men's basketball team returns to action January 3 at Nebraska for a 2 p.m. tip.

The Lady Hawks travel to Baltimore, Md. in non-conference play against Morgan State University on December 30. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and is UMES' last chance to grab another win before closing out 2008 and the first half of their season.
