PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The past week was quite a busy one surrounding Hawk athletics as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore saw several programs in action. A fantastic turnout was seen at Hawk Hysteria, where the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the UMES cheerleading squad gave fans a sneak peek of what is to come this season. The volleyball team won two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matches and the golf team placed 11th at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. UMES was the beneficiary of several accolades as four different student-athletes picked up awards this past week.

BASKETBALL

The two programs kicked off their season this past Friday night at the highly anticipated, Hawk Hysteria. The event saw a packed William P. Hytche Athletic Center showcase the first glimpse at this year’s squads as both participated in a three-point contest and a scrimmage. The UMES cheerleading team and several dance squads showcased their talents, much to the delight of the home crowd, which was estimated to be nearly 5,000. Fans were enticed with an assortment of free giveaways as there was enough excitement for all ages to be satisfied.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country teams were idle this week but did see two student-athletes honored with MEAC Cross Country Performers of the Week. Senior Cynthia Anais and junior Zavior Brown collected the honors after their performances in the University of Delaware Blue & Gold Invitational on Oct. 15.

GOLF

UMES golf team participated at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-18 at the par-72, 6,540-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton, N.C. The squad, which placed 11th overall at the event, was led by sophomore Gregory Raad. Raad shot two rounds of 79 on day one, followed by an 82 on the final day to finish at 240 (+30), taking 58th place. His effort placed one better than sophomore Michael Veverka, who was 59th after shooting 81 and 82 on day one and a 79 on day two. He ended with a final tally of 242 (+32). Sophomore Paul Cecil finished in 60th as he registered the strongest improvement from the first two rounds of 83 to post a 78 on the last. His final score was 244 (+34).

Raad’s efforts in the event led him to being named the male recipient of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athlete of the Week.

VOLLEYBALL

In recent years, the UMES volleyball team has loved the month of October. The team has won all nine of its matches this month as the Hawks have dropped just one game in October since the 2009 season. UMES went 2-0 this past week with two victories over MEAC foes, Delaware State University and Howard University.

The women opened the week with a 3-0 thrashing of Delaware State (25-17, 25-20, 25-18) as the squad registered 13 service aces. The Hawks received impressive play from freshman Saitaua Iosia (12 kills, six digs), sophomore Maline Vaitai (nine kills, three service aces) and sophomore Kaveinga Lea’Aetoa (nine kills, two digs). Freshman Jessie Vicic notched 33 assists and five service aces in the win.

UMES would pick up its seventh victory in the MEAC and second triumph of the week in its match over Howard on Sunday. The team won 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 12-25, 25-16) with four players notching nine kills and Iosia and Vaitai picking up four digs apiece.

Iosia’s efforts this week propelled her to being honored as the female recipient of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athlete of the Week. She has now won this award three times this season. The freshman was also honored earlier in the week with her seventh consecutive MEAC Rookie of the Week honor.

UPCOMING WEEK (Oct. 24-Oct. 31)
