Princess Anne, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men and Women's Indoor Track & Field teams kicked off their season today in fine fashion, taking three first place finishes plus 11 more top five places en route to a successful meet.

Maurice threw a personal best of 12.13 meters, a few inches shy of 40 feet. Matthew Broyles took sixth in the men's event with a throw of 11.93 meters.

The other top finishes came in the women's 3000 meter run with cross-country stars Betty Chumbe and Janeth Chelangat taking first and second place respectively with times of 10:32.01 and 10:34.54.

The men turned in outstanding times in the 60 meter hurdles. Senior Ronnie Beard won the preliminaries with a time of 8.06 but slowed a little in the finals, taking third place with an 8.21. NCAA Championship qualifier Dwayne Robinson came home fifth with an 8.25.

Also taking a third place finish was James Moore who jumped 1.98 meters in the high jump, about six feet, six inches.

Danieth Pryce took a third place finish herself in the 60 meter dash with a 7.68. She recorded the same place in the preliminaries but improved her time from a 7.77. Luckett took 14th in those same prelims.

In the men's 800 meter run Christopher Havrilla crossed the tape in fourth place with a time of 2:02.70 while Alfred Singoei was seventh with a 2:04.73. Jerome Pyuzza came home 17th in the same event.

In the women's 60 meter hurdles Forbes was fourth with an 8.90 while Nikita Williams was tenth with a 9.54.

In the team events UMES ran very well, taking third in the women's distance medley, second in the men's distance medley and eighth in the men's 4 x 400 meter relay.

"It was an outstanding meet," said Head Coach Ernest Barrett. "For the first meet of the year we showed well against some very good competition, including several conference schools. I am very pleased with many of our field events and distance events. We have a lot of work to do for Virginia Tech," he added.

The Hawks next travel to the Hokies on January 12-13 for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
