PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Several University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletes performed well at the Coach O Collegiate Invitational at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Friday.

The Hawks won a total of nine finals on the day.

The non-scoring meet featured collegiate teams from UMES, Coppin State, St. Paul's College and Tiffin University.

On the women's side, Saisha Woodward and (Atlanta, Ga.) and Joycelyn Wheeler (Temple Hills, Md.) went 1-2 in the shot put with marks of 13.74 and 13.62 meters, respectively.

Lady Hawks' freshman Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) took the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.83, while finishing in a tie for second in the 60 meters in 8.03.

In the women's distance events, UMES took the top-four spots in the 800 as Celia Whyte (Manchester Jamaica), Cynthia Anais (Paris, France), Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) and Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) completed the sweep. Whyte won the race in a time of 2:21.38.

Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) won the one-mile event in 5:13.15, over a minute faster than the competition.

Jessica Abrantes (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Tiffany Webb (Upper Marlboro, Md.) paced each other in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 13:30.04 and 13:30.93, respectively.

Both UMES teams in the 4-by-400-meter relay topped the field as the Lady Hawks' "B" team outran the "A" team of Anais, Hawkins, James and Jones, by more than two seconds. The winners finished in 4:07.07.

Anais, James, Thomas and Whyte won the women's distance medley in a time of 13:07.88.

On the men's side of things, Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md). picked up a win the 60-meter hurdles in 8.60, while Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) was sixth in 9.44.

Freshman Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) was victorious in the men's 200 in 22.14 and sophomore Corey Alexander (Orange, N.J.) won the 400 in 50.95.

Both the men's and women's indoor track and field teams will be back in action in Annapolis, Md., next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 16-17) at the Navy Invitational.
