PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --Both the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's indoor track and field programs had successful meets to open the New Year. The women's team placed second at Delaware, while the men competed in the UMES Collegiate Invitational.

The team's had a combined 14 first place finishes. Geranda Williams, Imani Cox and Lexia Robinson earned gold in field events. Williams had a distance of 12.03 meters in the triple jump, while Cox threw a 14.27-meter toss in the shot put. Robinson finished second in the shot put with a 13.31m toss.

She would record a weight throw distance of 17.40 meters, earning gold in the event for the Hawks. Cox and Shawnata Young finished in second and third place, respectively. Cox had a toss of 16.86 meters, with Young throwing a 14.17-meter toss in the throw.

Dillon Simon and George Chandler placed first in their respective events. Simon finished with a toss of 17.21 meters in the shot put, while Chandler threw a distance of 14.25 meters in the weight throw. Teammate Rico Duncan marked silver in both events with a 13.15-meter and 11.68-meter toss, respectively.

Jasmine Benbow earned gold and silver at Delaware. She won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.09 seconds, and placed second in the 60-meter dash in 7.85 seconds. Dwayne Powell also won the 200m dash on the men's side in 22.12 seconds.

Gayon Evans and Hackeem Harris won gold and silver, respectively, in the 400m dash. Evans ran a 59.60-second finish for the women, while Harris finished in 52.01 seconds. Melina Gallas earned bronze with a 1:00.39. Javon Spencer and Alonzo Jarmon finished first and second in their respective sections in times of 54.86 and 55.06, respectively.

 

 

Lenora Guion-Firmin, Emilie Ducados and Shantol Hemley earned gold for the women in the 500m, 800m and 1000m runs, respectively. Guion-Firmin ran a 1:16.78 for the Hawks. Ducados finished in 2:23.02 in the 800m run, while Annis Mars earned silver in 2:23.44. Latitia Salley finished second in the 1000m run in 3:09.56.

Kraig Webb ran a 2:06.92 in the 800m to earn gold. The UMES men finished the 4x400-meter relay with a silver medal, running a time of 3:31.61.

The Hawks returned to practice this week, and will prepare for its next meet at Navy January 12 for its next meet.
