New York, N.Y. - It was a solid meet for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men and women's indoor track and field squad. The teams, originally scheduled to go to Virginia Tech, changed direction and headed north to what Head Coach Ernest Barrett described as "a one day event that will allow us to measure ourselves against some similar competition." Measure it did, as the Hawks took home 16 top ten finishes in over 20 events in the New Balance NYC Gotham Cup. UMES, running against schools the likes of Texas, Villanova, Temple, Rutgers and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes Delaware State (DSU), Coppin State (CSU) and Morgan State (MSU), put on a show, placing high in not only field events as they did at their last met, but track events too. The highlight of the day come on the women's side with Tanisha Wisdom taking the tape in first place with a time of 55.78 in the women's 400 meter dash. Wisdom crossed the line ahead of two competitors from Rutgers, Villanova, Bowie State and two each from Morgan and Delaware State. Another strong showing came from Betty Chumbe who took second in the one mile run with a time of 5:11.28. Teammate Janeth Chelangat took ninth in the field of 41 women with a time of 5:24.66. Also taking home the silver was the UMES women's distance medley team of Merrecia James, Chumbe, Chelangat and Wisdom. Their time was 12:21.98, ahead of teams from Rutgers, DSU and MSU. Not to be outdone James took another Hawk second place in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:23.85 while Ariana Forbes (8.94) and Nikita Williams (9.23) took fifth and ninth respectively in the 60 meter hurdles.
On the men's side of the 60 meter hurdles, senior sensation Ronnie Beard came across the line in fourth place with a time of 8.16, his qualifying time to make it to the event finals was the third highest with an 8.26. William McCullough took 18th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.15. A great finish in the field of 75 runners. Alfred Singoei took 14th in the one mile run (4:24.36) in another large field, this one with 58 runners. Christopher Havrilla was also steady for the Hawks with a 14th place in the 800 meter run in 1:59.18. That field saw 55 athletes. The men's 4 x 400 meter relay team of Beard, McCullough, Clayton James and Kendell Quashie came home eighth with a time of 3:19.07. James was outstanding in the 800 meter run with time of 1:55.62, good enough for eighth place. Danieth Pryce had an outstanding meet herself with and eighth place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.79, a little quicker than her qualifying time of 7.89. In the men's 60 meter dash Charles Elmer took 15th with a time of 7.42. In the field events the Fighting and Lady Hawks were again strong with a fifth and seventh place finish in the women's long jump. Sherita Harriot and Shannon Washington jumped 5.45 and 5.39 meters respectively. Also on the women's side Dionne Wright, who won the women's shot put last weekend came home eighth in a field of 44 with a throw of 1.95 meters. Soledad Maurice was 13th in the event, her throw was 12.10 meters. On the men's side Kimani Kirton, who also won the shot put last weekend, came home ninth with a throw of 14.99 meters. James Moore was eighth in the high jump with a distance of 1.96 meters while Jeremiah Hicks and Elmer came home tenth and 18th in the long jump with distances of 6.83 meters and 6.58 meters respectively. All in all the Hawks claimed 22 top 20 finishes and helped prepare them for the next meet, the Penn State National Open on January 26 & 27. |
