HAWKS RUN WITH THE BIG DOGS IN GREAT DANE CLASSIC

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Indoor Track and Field program ran with the "big dogs" of the Great Dane Classic Friday. Hosted by the University of Albany, the Great Dane Classic hosted over 40 teams combined in men's and women's events. The UMES men finished seventh (29), while the women's team notched fourth (62). Both programs had standout performances.

Lenora Guion-Firmin and Gayon Evans each had gold medal finishes in their respective events. Guion-Firmin ran a 54.65 in the 400-meter dash to capture first, while Evans finished the 200m in 24.45. Andre Walsh ran a 21.38-second time in the 200m, and is ranked 27th nationally following his performance in the Classic.

Petra Kubesova finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run. Kubesova is ranked nationally in both the 3000m and 5000m runs. She is 39th in the 3000m, and 16th in the 5000m run. Teammates Shantol Hemley and Zavior Brown each performed well in the 800m run. Hemley finished eighth in the event, while Brown notched a fourth-place time of 1:56.04. Hemley finished in 2:17.93 for the Hawks.

In the throwing events, Lexia Robinson had the Hawks best finish in the weight throw. Robinson earned a silver medal in the event with a toss of 18.88 meters. Imani Cox finished fourth in the weight throw (17.45m), and took third place in the shot put (14.13m). Dillon Simon also finished second in the shot put with a distance of 17.26 meters.

 

 

Geranda Williams and Denvil Ruan each finished fourth in the triple jump with distances of 11.98 meters and 14.38 meters, respectively.

UMES will return to the track Saturday, Jan. 26 to compete in the "Saturday at the Armory" event in New York.
