Kent, Ohio - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's track and field team won the Black Squirrel Classic yesterday, beating the University of Buffalo 117-110.50. Kent State men's team followed in third with 108 points. The women's track and field team finished second with 123.40 points, just behind Bucknell who won the meet with 130.40 points. West Virginia's women finished third with 81.80 points.

On the men's side UMES saw solid performances in the 4x400 meter relay and the distance medley. The Fighting Hawks placed first in the 4x400 meter with a time of 3:17.15. The team was made up of Mikel Thomas, Ronnie Beard, William McCollough, and Clayton James.

In another team event Geoffrey Rutto, Glenn Grainger, Clayton James, and Alfred Singoei took second in the distance medley with a time of 10:15.30.

Beard had an impressive run, as he took first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.97. Following in second was NCAA qualifier Dwayne Robinson with a time of 8.15.

In the 400-meter dash the Fighting Hawks clinched three top five finishes. McCollough took first with a time of 48.94, Beard placed second with 49.39, and Thomas finished fifth with a time of 49.87.

 

 

Okezie Onyebuchi finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02.

The men had two second place finishes in the 8000-meter run and the 3000-meter run. Clayton James took second in the 800-meter with a time of 1:54.42 while Alfred Singoei took it in the 3000-meter with a time of 8:44.16.

In field events UMES nabbed two top finishes in the long jump as well as three top finishes in the triple jump. Jason Daly finished first in the long jump with a jump of 7.34 meters while Brandon Eaton finished fifth with a jump of 6.63 meters. In the triple jump Joshua Hylton took second place with a jump of 13.96 meters and Brandon Eaton finished fourth with a jump of 13.36 meters. Christopher Morrison also took fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 13.28 meters.

In the high jump Jamahl Strachan finished fourth with a jump of 1.92 meters.

Kimani Kirton placed third in the shot put with a throw of 16.96 meters.

On the women's team, Danieth Pryce ran a 7.67 in the 60-meter, taking first place while Cierra Layne followed in third with a 7.83.

It was in the women's 200 meter, where the Hawks took control as they captured the top three finishes. Tanesha Wisdom took home first with a time of 24.95, Layne was second with 25.27, and Sherrie Brown was third with 25.50. Ariana Forbes finished seventh with a time of 26.32.

Other outstanding performances were the women capturing first place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:56.37. They also took second in the distance medley with the team of Neda Khalili, Sherie Brown, Kathare Mundit, and Janeth Chelangat. They ran it in 12:58.56.

On the track the women got a first place finish from Wisdom in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.73 and a third place finish from Brown with a time of 58.33.

Forbes took second in the 60 meter hurdles as she finished with a time of 8.91.

In field events, the Lady Hawks received two first place finishes from Petagay O'Connor as she jumped 5.77 meters in the long jump and 11.42 meters in the triple jump. Sherita Harriott finished second in the long jump with a jump of 5.64 meters. Harriot also tied for fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.58 meters. Nykeshia Roberson took fourth place in the triple jump with a jump of 10.36 meters.

In other field events, Dionne Wright finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.07 meters.

The Lady Hawks had two eighth place finishes in Mundit who ran the 800-meter and Chelangat who ran the 3000-meter.

The Men's and Women's Track team are scheduled to compete this month at the Penn State National Open in State College, Pennsylvania on January 27th and 28th.
