DAY ONE OF TOUGH PENN STATE NATIONALS COMPLETE; HENRY SETS NEW WEIGHT THROW RECORD

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - On a short first day of competition at the Penn State Nationals at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track, junior Vanessa Henry (Capitol Heights, Md.) broke the University of Maryland Eastern Shore indoor track and field team's weight throw record Friday evening.
Henry, who set the previous record of 17.11m (56' 1.75") on Feb. 12, 2010 in Landover, Md., recorded a performance of 17.33m (56' 10.25"), good for sixth place on the day. Her previous season-best distance was 16.30m (53' 5.75"), which was set on Jan. 15 at the Navy Invitational.
Also competing on the day was the women's Distance Medley Relay team, which placed third with a time of 12:05.82. Members of the relay are junior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France), sophomore Kenesha Abrams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), sophomore Emilie Ducados (Paris, France) and junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.).
"This is a very tough meet with nationally-ranked competitors and schools," said Ernest Barrett. "Those who competed today did well and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's competition."
Saturday's running events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 400m while field events begin at 11 a.m. with the men's and women's high jump and women's shot put.
