UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Records fell at the Penn State National Open on January 29, as sophomore distance runner Eva Slavikova set a school record in the 3000m run, taking the event in 9:27.

Slavikova, who won her fourth individual title in as many weeks, finished above competitors from nationally ranked programs including Tennessee, Penn State, Georgetown, and Virginia. Her time of 9:27 is faster than the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship record and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships in March.

The Czech Republic native is now ranked 10th in the country in the 3000m and owns the top women's conference time in both the 3000m and mile run, outrunning the second place MEAC 3000m finisher by a full minute.

Senior Barnabas Togom also fared well at the Penn State Open, taking 13th in the 5000m run. Togom, whose time of 14:51 set a new school record in the event, now owns the top two conference marks this season.

In other events, sophomore Ronnie Beard placed fifth in the 60m hurdles, taking his event in 8.08. Kimani Kirton took eighth in the men's shot put, while the men's distance medley team of Beard, Togom, Clayton James and Geoffrey Rutto finished eight with a time of 10:12.

UMES had two women finish in the top 25 in the 800m run, with seniors Deborah Meadows and Evelynn Mendoza placing 12th and 24th with times of 2:18 and 2:20, respectively. Shakira Robinson took 17th in the 200m dash, while freshman Pavla Zavoralova finished the mile in 5:17, her fastest time this season. Zavoralova, who shattered her previous season high by a whopping 11 seconds, is now ranked third in the conference this year in the mile run.

 

 

The Hawks will host their next meet on Saturday, February 5. Competition at the UMES Hawk Games will begin at 9:00am.
