AKRON, OHIO - Junior Tanisha Wisdom (St. Catherine, Jamaica/G.C. Foster College) set a new school record in the women's 400m run when University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track and field team competed at the Akron Open in Akron, Ohio on Feb. 2-3. Wisdom took silver in the 400m run after recording a new personal record of 55.03 in the gold division of the event. She also grabbed second in the 200m dash with a time of 25.02. Seniors Dionne Wright (Manchester, Jamaica/McKendree) and Danieth Pryce (Kingston, Jamaica/G.C. Foster College) each took second in their respective events. Wright threw 13.83m (45-04.50 feet) in the women's shot put while Pryce's time of 7.64 in the women's 60m dash put her as the runner-up in that event. Sophomore Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica/G.C. Foster College) won gold in the 800m run in 2:17.42 while taking seventh in the 3000m run in 10:13.87. Ariana Forbes (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) had a good showing in the 60m hurdles with a fourth place finish in 8.78. On the men's side, William McCullough (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills H.S.), Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas/Faith Temple Academy), and Jeremiah Hicks (Dover, Del./Dover H.S.) each took gold in their respective events. McCullough won the 400m dash in 49.63 while Strachan jumped 1.98m (6-06.00 feet) to take first in the high jump. Hicks won the long jump after leaping 6.96m (22-10.00 feet). McCullough also took seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 22.68. Senior Alfred Singoei (Nairobi, Kenya/Iowa State) ran a new personal record of 4:17.23 in the mile run while Clayton James (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston) grabbed fifth place in the 800m run in 1:53.41. James and the 4x400m relay team of McCullough, Christopher Dawkins (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville H.S.) and Kendell Quashie (Adelphi, Md./High Point H.S.) took fifth in their event in 3:24.33.
Kimani Kirton (St. Thomas, Jamaica/Kingston) was the runner up in the shot put with a throw of 17.40m (57-01.00 feet) while James Moore (Manassas, Va./Osbourn H.S.) took second in the high jump. Charles Elmer (Columbia, Md./Long Reach H.S.) finished with the bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.62m (21-08.75) and later took sixth in the triple jump (13.11m or 43-00.25 feet). The Hawks return to action on February 9-10, when they compete at the St. Valentine's Invite in Boston, Mass. |
