NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) ran his best time of the season and recorded a new school record with a time of 21.33 in the men's 200-meter dash for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational this weekend. This time narrowly missed the NCAA provisional time of 21.23. Junior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) placed just behind Gauntlett in the 200 with a time of 21.83. In the men's long jump, freshman David Sandiford (Brooklyn, Md.) recorded a season best distance of 6.90 meters. Senior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) also registered a season best time of 8:50.01 in the 3000-meter run. Numerous athletes on the women's team also tallied season-bests at the meet. Sophomore Melina Gallas (Paris, France) ran a 56.33 in the 400-meter dash. In the 1-mile run, junior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) ran a 5:08.61 while senior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) ran a 5:16.82. Most of the Hawks rested this weekend in preparation for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, slated for Thursday, February 11 through Saturday, February 13 at the Prince George Sports Complex in Landover, Md.
