NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's track and field team won two events and took second in two others at the Vince Brown Invitational on the campus of Christopher Newport University Saturday.
Senior Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) placed first in the shot put with a mark of 13.95 meters. She also broke her own school record, set earlier this season, in the weight throw with a toss of 14.67 and was second in the event. Sophomore Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J. paced the field in the 400 meters in a time of 59.09.
In the men's side, Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) was runner-up in the 3,000 meters (8:48.57), while sophomore Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) crossed sixth in 8:56.89.
Highly touted freshman thrower Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) saw her first action of the year, turning in fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the weight throw and shot put, respectively. She threw 14.21 meters in the weight throw and 12.94 meters in the shot.
Other top performers on the day included Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.), who was sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:26.58. Senior Solomon Kirongo (Nairobi, Kenya) also placed 10th in the 5,000 meters in 16:49.36. Junior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamiaca) did the same in the women's 800 in 2:22.38. Sophomore Jocelyn Wheeler (Temple Hills, Md.) picked up a pair of eighth-place marks in the shot put and weight throw. She threw12.47 meters in the shot and 23.52 meters in the weight throw.
Both UMES track and field teams travel to the Landover, Md. for the MEAC Championships next weekend at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
