BOSTON, MASS. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Track and Field teams competed at the St. Valentines Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts on Feb. 10-11. Although the meet was an open invite, and therefore there was no team scoring, the Hawks came away with several solid performances. In field events, junior Dionne Wright led the way as she captured first place in the shot put with a throw of 46.1 feet. Another notable performances in the long jump as junior Sherita Harriott finished 10th in a field of 59 with a jump of 17.1 feet. UMES saw notable performances from junior Danieth Pryce in the 200 meter dash as she took fifth place in a field of 137 with a time of 24.40. Not too far behind her was freshman Sherie Brown who finished 10th with a time of 24.91, freshman Cierra Layne who finished 12th with a time of 24.94 and sophomore Tanesha Wisdom who finished 18th with a time of 25.20. In the women's 400 meter dash, Wisdom placed seventh in a field of 120 with a time of 56.71. Freshman Ariana Forbes finished fourth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.39. In team events, the Lady Hawks finished sixth in a field of 38 in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:52.83. On the men's side, sophomore Jason Daley captured first place in the long jump with a jump of 23.8 feet. Freshman Brandon Eaton finished 19th with a jump of 21.6 feet.
Junior Ronnie Beard placed fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 47.4 feet. Eaton finished 15th in this event with a jump of 45.4 feet. Kimani Kirton had an outstanding performance as he placed second in the shot put with a throw of 59.3 feet. On the track, the Fighting Hawks also saw solid performances from freshman Mikel Thomas as he placed fourth in a field of 122 in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.61. Christopher Dawkins finished 24th with a time of 22.26. In the 400 meter dash, sophomore William McCollough finished 13th with a time of 48.61. Clayton James finished 39th in a field of 148, in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.35. The men's 4x400 team also had an impressive performance as they placed third with a time of 3:13.23. The men's and women's team are next scheduled to compete at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships on Feb. 17-18. |
