LANDOVER, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's track and field team leads after Day 2 of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

The Lady Hawks won two events Friday to collect 20 of their 52 total points for the competition. UMES is in front of Hampton (44 points) and Morgan State (38), in second and third place, respectively.

Senior Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) paced the field in the 800 meters, winning the race in 2:15.31 and leading a group of four UMES scorers across the line. Senior Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica) finished fourth in 2:15.87 to earn five points, followed by freshman Cynthia Anais (Paris France) who was fifth in 2:16.24 for four points. Sophomore Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) tallied two points for a seventh-place finish in 2:17.08.

Three of the same women had a hand in UMES' other event win on the day. Anais, Whyte and James, along with sophomore Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) were victorious in the distance medley relay. The team placed first in 12:02.1 with James running the anchor leg.

UMES picked up eight points in the shot put. Senior Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) was third with a mark of 14.26 meters (46 feet, 9.5 inches), scoring six points and freshman Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) finished seventh with a toss of 13.03 meters (42 feet, nine inches) to earn one point.

The men's team sits in seventh through two days of completion with 18 total points. Norfolk State is in the top spot with 55; Morgan State (33) and Coppin State (27) round out the top three.

Sophomores Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) and Peter Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) ran 3-4 in the 5,000 meters in times of 15.19.47 and 15:24.76, respectively. The pair earned 11 points in the event.

The distance medley relay team of Kiprotich, Sang, sophomore Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.J.) and freshman Julian Gomez-Jordan (Houston, Texas) finished seventh in 10:50.70 for one point.

The final men's scorer for the day was senior Jamahl Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) in the in the pole vault. He leaped 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches) to take third place and six points.

The final day of competition features the women's pole vault and pentathlon. Field events include the men's heptathlon, shot put, high jump and triple jump.
