UMES freshman Merrecia James set a new MEAC Indoor Track & Field record in the women's 800m

Landover, Md. - The Hawks got two first place finishes on day one of the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Freshman Merrecia James set a new MEAC Indoor Track & Field record in the women's 800m with her time of 2:10.57. The previous record of 2:11.86 was held by Diana Pitts of Coppin State (1991). On the men's side Jason Daley took the gold in the men's long jump with a jump of 7.31 meters.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men and Women's Indoor Track & Field teams both stand in third place after day one of the MEAC Indoor Championships. They accumulated many points from Danieth Pryce who came in second in the women's 200 meter dash. Dionne Wright also came home second in the women's shot put. Tanisa Wisdom came home third in the 400 meter dash while Ronnie Beard took fourth in the men's 200 meter dash.

Also on the men's side UMES took two fifth place finishes from Christopher Dawkins in the men's 400 meter dash and Clayton James in the men's 800 meter run.

The Lady Pirates of Hampton and Spartans of Norfolk State lead after the first day of competition in the 2007 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex, in Landover, Md.

Hampton tallied 51 points and earned the day one lead over Morgan State (38), Maryland Eastern Shore (26) Norfolk State (15) and South Carolina State (14).

 

 

Yvette Lewis, the 2006 MEAC Indoor Outstanding Performer, led the Lady Pirates with 13.50 points. Lewis won the long jump with a 5.99m (19-07.75 ft) leap.

On the men's side, Norfolk State ended day one of competition in first place with 40 points. Coppin State (29), Maryland Eastern Shore (23), Delaware State (20) and Florida A&M (14) rounded out the top five.

Coppin State's Nigel Leonce, Shane Smith and UMES' Jason Daley all recorded 10 points for their teams to lead during day one's action. Leonce won the 800m, while Smith was first in the men's pole vault with a 4.73 m (15-06.25). Daley won the long jump with a 7.31m leap (23-11.75 ft).

Norfolk State's Marlon Woods earned 2,888 points after the first three events in the men's heptathlon. Harold Rose (2,822) of Bethune-Cookman, Morgan State's Dakari Taylor-Watson (2,728), Delaware State's Thomas Dunn (2,701) and Coppin State's Arlon Morrison (2, 636) rounded out the top five.

The Indoor Track & Field Championship will conclude on Saturday, February 17 beginning with the women's pole vault and women's pentathlon at 9 a.m. The remaining field events include the men's shot put and triple jump events. The championship will also feature the mile run, 400m dash, 60m hurdles, 200m dash, and he women women's 3000m and men's 5000m run. The championships conclude with the men's and women's 4x400m relay races.

Saturday, February 17 is "Adopt a MEAC Team Day" Fans are encouraged to select one of the 11 MEAC institutions as their adopted team and show their support by wearing the team's colors. MEAC key chains will also be given out to the first 100 people in attendance.

Admission for the MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships is $5 dollars for adults and $3 dollars for children, students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
