Landover, MD - The Maryland Eastern Shore Indoor Track teams placed high in last weekend's MEAC Championships, with the women's team coming in 2nd place and the men's team in 4th out of the 11-team field. The first day, Friday, February 20th, began with outstanding performances in the Pole Vault competition with Eboni Reavis placing 3rd and Candice Ringgold placing 6th place overall. Petagay O'Conner placed third in Triple Jump with a jump of 12.18m. In the 800m run, Deborah Meadows placed 2nd with a time of 2:16.06 and Evelynn Mendoza 6th, helping to accumulate points putting the Lady Hawks in second place after all first day events. After observing outstanding field performances by their teammates, the Lady Hawks smashed the MEAC record in the Distance Medley Relay, running a time of 12:15.15. The members of the DMR were Deborah Meadows, Alyssa Walker, Tasha Century and Eva Slavikova.
Ronnie Beard began the day for the men by placing 5th in the triple jump. Damion Drummond won the 800m run, breaking his own MEAC record running a time of 1:52.18 as Barnabas Togom followed him placing 6th overall. Members of the Men's Distance Medley Relay, Damion Drummond, Joseph Hylton, David Thibou and Barnabas Togom placed third overall with a time of 10:14.25. These performances started the Men off in 3rd place at the end of the first day of competition.
On Saturday, there were more outstanding performances with Kimani Kurton winning the Shot Put, throwing 15.56m and Tiwana Smith placing 5th with a throw of 12.46m. Also, KellyAnn Lou long jumped 5.65m, putting her in 6th place overall. On the track, Eva Slavikova held on to 2nd place by a hair in the mile run with a time of 5:05.39, breaking the MEAC record. In the Men's mile, Damion Drummond surprised all competition and placed 2nd, running 4:19.52 and Barnabas Togom ran 4:20.04 placing 3rd. More points were generated in the distance events as Eva Slavikova won the 3000m run (10:34.43) and Barnabas Togom placed 3rd in the 5000n run (15:19.46). Ronnie Beard had an outstanding performance in the 200m dash (22.28), placing 2nd and Alyssa Walker placed 3rd (56.91) in the 400m dash. At the end of the day, the Women finished 2nd and the Men finished 4th overall. "I am extremely proud of each and every one of my athletes. They put their heart on the line and they left in on the track. I am looking forward to maintaining the good performances for the outdoor season", said head coach Ernest Barrett. |
