NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) and junior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.) of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team earned provisional qualifying spots in the NCAA indoor track and field championship at the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center Friday and Saturday.

James finished eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:08.62 to slip under the qualification standard by less than four tenths of a second. Fothergill was third in the 400-meter dash in 46.75, half a second below what he needed to advance to indoor championships at Texas A&M March 13-14.

James and Fothergill were two of 95 competitors to earn NCAA-qualifying marks at the meet.

Three other UMES runners posted personal-record times in the women's 800 and men's 400, respectively. Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica), while just missing a chance to run in NCAA championship competition, finished ninth in a time of in a time of 2:09.52.

Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) ran 15th in 2:11.62 for her best time in the event. Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) also ran a personal-best 800 in 2:12.13, crossing 17th.

Corey Alexander (Orange, N.J.) was second among UMES athletes in the 400 and 15th overall. He ran 48.55, another personal best in the event.

Both Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Paul Jones-Burden (Rahway, N.C.) also ran in the women's and men's 400 meters, respectively. Lendor was 14th in 58.34 and Jones-Burden was 20th in 49.30.
