PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) kicked off its 2007-08 Indoor Track & Field season in impressive fashion this past weekend, taking first place in half of the events and looking like a team fresh off of a championship in the men and women's cross-country season and hoping to better their second place finishes in the conference from last season. In the field events UMES looks to rebound from several key loses, including shot putter Kimani Kirton, jumper Jason Daley, and women's shot putter Dionne Wright. They seem on pace to do so as Jamahl Strachan (4.27 meters) took second in the men's pole vault and Matthew Broyles finished second in the men's shot put. On the women's side UMES dominated the shot put placing Tiona Long, Joycelyn Wheeler, Soledad Maurice and Demetria Staten in places two through five of the event. In the long jump Cori Otey (5.19 meters) took first for the women while Charles Elmer came home fourth on the men's side. In the high jump Rashida Beckford and James Moore (1.98 meters) won their respective events.
On the track UMES also has several key losses to fill. Ronnie Beard, Alfred Singoei and Danieth Pryce will be missed. They hope to get some production out of newcomers and returnees who have a year under their belts. In the 60 meter hurdles UMES again won with Danai Lendor (9.67) winning the women's race and Thacious Freeman taking third on the men's side. In the 60 meter dash UMES took places two through five with Tanisha Wisdom, Sherie Brown, Danielle Spencer and Otey finishing in that order in the women's race. Already known for their long distance running the team shined in the long events with Merrecia James (1:16.79) winning the women's one mile ruin and Celia Whyte taking second. Amon Kiprotich (4:27.93) and Clayton James finished first and second on the men's side of the mile run. In the men's 400 meter run Corey Alexander was third while Anthony Tolliver finished 12th. The women's 800 meter run was also dominated with Tamica Thomas (2:26.44) and Tiffany Webb taking first and second in that event. In the men's 500 meter run UMES took third, fourth and fifth with James, Paul Jones-Burden and William McCullough taking those respective sports. In the men's 800 meter run Jerome Pyuzza took seventh as the Hawk's only finisher. In the women's 200 meter dash Wisdom (24.91) crossed the line first with fellow Lady Hawks Lendor and Danielle Spencer taking second and third. On the men's side Miller took third while Thomas Keane-Dawes was sixth. In the women's 3000 meter dash UMES took the top three spots as Betty Chumbe (10:56.89), Tamica Thomas and Janeth Chelangat finished in that order. UMES repeated the feat on the men's side as Peter Sang (9:06.09), Kiprotich and Kirongo finished one through three. In the team events UMES stood tall. The women's 4x400 meter relay saw the team of Lendor, Otey, Brown and James win with a time of 4:00.94 while the team of Danielle Spencer, Webb, Whyte and Wison took second just three second behind them. In the men's 4x400 meter relay the team of Miller, Jones-Burden, William McCullough and James won with a time of 3:20.82 while the team of Corey Alexander, Keane-Dawes, Pyuzza, and Freeman took fourth, thirty second behind the winning team. |
