Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Men's Track & Field team posted a first place finish in an eight team field while the women came home third in their nine team field to open the teams' 2005-2006 Indoor Season.

On the men's side the Hawks saw some dominating performances. Dwayne Robinson, who competed in the NCAA Championships in the outdoor season saw no drop off, taking first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.14. Not to be outdone Jason Daly took first in his event, the men's long jump, with a distance of 7.71 meters and qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Championships. Another first place finisher was Ronnie Beard who ran 49.05 in the 400 meter dash, topping fellow Hawks William McCollough in third (49.53) and Mikel Thomas in fourth (50.18). Gareth Burrowes was sixth with a 50.78.

UMES was without MEAC Champion shot putter Kimani Kirton due to personal reasons but they got a solid outing in the event nonetheless with Bryan Ingram taking third with a throw of 11.75 meters. Another solid outing was a second place finish in the 3000 meter run by Alfred Singoei with a time of 8:35.66.

Other top outings included the 60-meter dash where Onyebuchi Okezie took fifth and Daley sixth with times of 6.99 and 7.02 respectively. Clayton James came home fourth in the 500 meter dash in 1:06.46, an event won by former Hawk track star Damion Drummond, now running for the New York Elite Track Club. He won with a time of 1:06.01.

 

 

Christopher Morrison was second and Jamahl Strachan was third in the high jump with distances of 6-09 and 6-07 meters respectively. The Terrapins dominated in the one mile run but Geoffrey Rutto managed fifth with a time of 4:41.50. In the 200 meter run the Hawks came home fourth with Theo Jones running in 22.97. Okezie was sixth with a time of 23.47.

In the only team event for the men the Hawks again dominated, running the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:19.72 taking first and topping squads from the University of Maryland, Coppin State, Bowie State and Virginia State. The men tallied 73 points for a first place finish while Morgan State was second (60.5) and Maryland was third with 55 points.

On the women's side the Lady Hawks ruled the roost in the shot put winning the event with Dionne Wright throwing 14.39 while Tiwanna Smith was fourth with 11.91 and Soledad Maurice was fifth with 11.28 meters. In other field events Petagay O'Connor, a MEAC champion took second in the long jump with a distance of 5.63 meters. Sherita Harriott was fourth with 5.49 meters.

Shakira Robinson (7.72) gave the Hawks another top five finish with a third place finish in the 60 meter dash. Cierra Layne took fifth in the same event running 7.96.Same distance, add hurdles and the Hawks got a fourth place finish from Ariana Forbes with a time of 9.12.

Cross-Country sensation Janeth Chelangat took second place in the one mile run with a 5:31.32 while Sherie Brown took third in the 400 meter dash with a 58.44. Chelangat also came home seventh in the 3000 meter run with a time of 13:54.18. In the same event Neda Khalili was second, running 12:17.60.

In the 800 meter run Kathare Mundit took fourth with a time of 2:30.15

In the 200 meter run the Lady Hawks took three top ten places with Robinson winning the event in 25.35. Brown took third with a time of 25.59 and Layne taking tenth at 26.50.

The women finished third with 50 points while the University of Maryland finished first with 103 points and Morgan State was second with 69 points.

The college version of the meet didn't begin until approximately 3:00 pm while the high school meet, which started at 9:00 am, featured almost 20 high schools, including local Seaford High School. Complete results of both meets can be found at www.umeshawks.com
